Chair and Director
Selection of incoming Chairs and Faculty Directors should be completed during the semester prior to the current Chair/Director’s departure, to ensure the new appointments can be processed prior to the appointment start date of July 1st.
All Chair and Faculty Director appointments in the College begin on July 1st, and are paid out over 12 months on a fiscal year basis, funded by the College.Ìý
Once the Unit has selected its recommendation for a new Chair/Faculty Director in conjunction with Unit bylaws, the results and length of appointment are emailed to the College of Arts and Sciences' Faculty Affairs Coordinator as the Unit's recommendation for review by the Dean.Ìý
The stipend amount is determined and calculated according to the current base academic year salary in alignment with the current Fiscal Year Stipend Model, which is a compensation system driven by metrics including measures of unit complexity, plus a measure of research quality.Ìý
Process for Hiring Chairs and Faculty Directors
- At the beginning of the spring semester, A&S Faculty Affairs will submit a job posting for all chair, director, associate chair, and associate director positions that have an end date for the current Fiscal Year.
- The faculty liaison in each department will be listed on the job posting for interested candidates to contact.
- For unplanned administrative vacancies, please reach out to A&S Faculty Affairs for consultation.
- Unit selectsÌýa new Chair/Faculty Director per unit bylaws.
- Unit emails name of new Chair/Faculty Director and length of appointment to the CAS Faculty Affairs (CAS-Faculty@Colorado.edu) for endorsement by the Dean.
- Offer letters are drafted and processed by CAS Faculty Affairs.
- Offer letters will be drafted in mid-April/May
- Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA) reviews and approves the draft offer letter.
- The offer letter is routed by CAS Faculty Affairs with CC to the following via DocuSign:

- College of Arts and Sciences Budget Office
- CAS will also submit the HRSC contract sheet to the HRSC for HCM entry.
- CAS Faculty Affairs downloads completed letter to Personnel File.
- Appointment entered in HCM (Human Resources software) by the Campus Human Resources Service Center.

For interim administrative vacancies, please reach out to A&S Faculty Affairs for consultation. Any reference on the letter of offer for "Chair" or "Faculty Director" should be replaced with "Interim Chair" or "Interim Faculty Director" accordingly.
