��ý�� will experience snow and freezing temperatures for the next few days. Here are some tips to be prepared.

1. Prepare your home for cold temperatures

If you live off campus, take these steps to prevent damage and frozen pipes:

Disconnect hoses from outside spigots. It could be your responsibility to remove hoses after each use in freezing weather to avoid pipe damage. Any damage could be your financial responsibility.
Keep your space warm. Use thick curtains or weather insulator film to prevent heat transfer through windows and doors, and make sure furniture, rugs and clothing are not blocking air ducts and heat vents.
Set your thermostat to at least 62 degrees. Keep the heat on, especially if you're away for the weekend.

If pipes freeze and leak, shut off the main water supply immediately.

2. Tend to snowfall

After snow, remove buildup from trees and bushes to prevent damage.

In ��ý��, residents need to clear sidewalks within 24 hours of snowfall. Check your lease or ask your landlord about snow removal responsibilities. If you're away for the weekend, arrange for someone to clear your property.

3. Take additional steps if you’re leaving town

Traveling this weekend? Here are a few other steps to take before you leave:

Lock all windows and doors. Move any expensive items such as laptops away from windows where they may be visible or bring them with you. Make sure your bike is securely locked or bring it inside if you can.
Set your lights on a timer and your heat to a reasonable temperature (about 62 degrees) to prevent pipes from freezing.
Don’t leave pets by themselves. Find someone to take care of them while you are away.
Ask a friend to collect your mail and pick up newspapers and/or any trash in your yard. If you’ll be gone for a longer period of time, consider having the post office hold your mail while you’re away.

4. Travel safely

Road safety is crucial, especially in snowy and icy conditions. If you’re driving around this weekend, here are some tips to stay safe:

Stay informed: Check weather and traffic reports before leaving and consider alternative routes if necessary. If you’re traveling on major highways or interstates, check COTrip for updates on road closures and other changes.
Slow down: Roads can be slippery, so give yourself extra time to get where you’re going. Reducing speed increases your control on icy patches.
Keep your distance: Allow more space between your vehicle and others as braking distances increase on slick roads.
Pack an emergency kit: Include items like blankets, a flashlight, jumper cables and non-perishable snacks in case of unexpected delays.

If you use public transportation, download the Transit app for bus routes and real-time transit information to stay informed if there are delays or cancellations due to weather.

For many Buffs, college is often the first time you’re managing money on your own. While it may seem challenging at first, adopting a few easy habits can empower you to manage your money confidently and pave the way for future success. Here are some practical tips to help you thrive financially.

Pay your bills on time

Late payments means extra fees, service interruptions and a hit to your credit score.

How to avoid common pitfalls:

Set up automatic payments or calendar reminders.

Always check your account balance to avoid overdraft fees.

Short on cash? Call the company before the due date. Many will offer payment plans or extensions.

Keep credit card debt under control

Many students get their first credit card in college, and it can be easy to make mistakes. Credit cards can help build credit and cover emergencies, but they can also lead to long-term debt if you’re not careful.

What to know:

Interest rates are high, and paying only the minimum each month mostly covers interest—not your balance.

Overspending on everyday purchases or impulse buys can add up fast.

This mobile dining option is designed to keep the campus community connected and well-fed—especially while dining options in the UMC are limited due to construction.

Grand Opening Celebration

Students, faculty and staff are invited to Roaming Ralphie’s Grand Opening on Wednesday, Jan. 28. Stop by the trailer in the University Club west parking lot (lot 201) between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to celebrate the launch, grab a bite and experience this new addition to campus dining.

What’s on the menu?

A grill-style lineup featuring breakfast burritos, burgers and chicken sandwiches, plus daily specials, sides and beverages.

Payments accepted

Meal Plans, Campus Cash and credit cards are accepted at Roaming Ralphie. Cash isn’t accepted at the trailer, but you can load cash onto your Buff OneCard at a kiosk to use as Campus Cash.

Regular hours

During the academic year, Roaming Ralphie will be open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., weather permitting. It will be closed Saturdays and Sundays.

WeatherTech Cafe and Bakery

The C4C has many spaces and lounges for studying. Stop by the WeatherTech Café and Bakery on the first floor for specialty coffee, made‑from‑scratch pastries, and new Botrista beverages like refreshers, BobaChillers, smoothies, dessert drinks and milk teas.

Illy Coffee Vending Machine

Starting January 2026, the UMC will feature a new Illy coffee vending machine—offering convenient, high‑quality espresso and specialty beverages just outside of Elevations Credit Union.

The Laughing Goat

The Laughing Goat at Norlin Library is located in the Norlin Commons. Enjoy espresso drinks, coffee, tea, sandwiches and snacks with tables inside and outside the library’s southeast entrance.

Fen's Cafe

Head inside the ATLAS Center for fresh, delicious and healthy Taiwanese street food, pastries, boba teas and coffee drinks. ATLAS has study rooms on the second floor.

Violet Peak

With locations in the Engineering Center, Koelbel and Wolf Law buildings on central campus and the Aerospace Engineering building on east campus, Violet Peak offers everything from coffee and espresso to smoothies and sandwiches.

Stingers Cafe

If you are on east campus, visit the Biotech Building for coffee, breakfast, salads and sandwiches.

SEEC Café

Enjoy a full-service espresso bar at this restaurant located at Research Park in the SEEC building.

Foolish Craig’s Too

Located in the Porter Biosciences building, Foolish Craig’s Too serves ��ý�� Organic Coffee and a selection of food items, including their award-winning bread made fresh daily in their bakery on Pearl Street.

*The UMC Starbucks will be closed from Dec. 18, 2025, to mid-August 2026 while the UMC is under construction.

Coffee on the go

If you’re on the move and want to grab something on your way to class, stop by one of the campus markets. Markets accept meal plans, Campus Cash, Munch Money, Flatiron Meal Plans and credit/debit cards.

Village Market: Located in Williams Village, Village Market proudly serves Starbucks beverages and other on-the-go necessities.

��ý�� is a beautiful place to live with fun entertainment, great food and outdoor adventures. Whether you’re living in ��ý�� for the first time this winter or have been in town for a while, here are some tips for making the most of your time here.

Enjoy outdoor activities

��ý�� often has many warm and sunny days to enjoy the great outdoors, even during winter. Here are a few activities to try this season:

Explore the ��ý�� Creek Path: Take a walk or bike ride on the ��ý�� Creek Path to check out new parts of the city. Students can sign up for a free BCycle student pass with unlimited e-bike rides.

Try hiking or snowshoeing: If you don’t have all the essential equipment, Outdoor Pursuits has snowshoes, winter hiking boots, trekking poles, insulated pants and jackets and more available for rent.

Go skiing: If you have an Ikon Pass, check out the CU Ski Bus Program for transportation to the mountains.

Visit thrift stores for winter gear

Do you need to purchase items for winter? Whether you need a snow shovel, waterproof boots or a new winter coat, thrift stores are a great place to find reasonably priced goods.

��ý�� is home to many thrift stores and secondhand shops. Not only will you save money and find one-of-a-kind items, but shopping at thrift stores is a sustainable choice that can help the environment.

Avoid tickets by shoveling your sidewalk

In ��ý��, residents must clear sidewalks within 24 hours of a snowstorm. Review your lease or check with your landlord to see who is responsible for snow removal. If you have any questions, contact Off-Campus Life for a free lease review.

Another reminder for winter in ��ý�� is to make sure your heat is kept at the temperature your lease designates, or above 55 degrees if it doesn’t designate a temperature, to prevent pipes from freezing.

Support local businesses and get involved

Get to know your neighbors and community on another level by attending local events and supporting local businesses. Check Downtown ��ý��’s Bites on a Budget list for affordable and local dining options.

If you have some free time this semester, volunteering is a great way to get more involved in your community. Volunteering allows you to meet new people, support a cause that matters to you and gain experience you can include on your resume. Connect with the Service Learning & Impact in Community Engagement (SLICE) to learn about opportunities.

Be considerate of others

We all play a part in the well-being of our community. Whether we realize it or not, our actions can sometimes affect those around us. For example, playing loud music at the end of a long day may help you relax, but it might also annoy your neighbors. Whether you’re in your neighborhood or other areas of ��ý��, be considerate and thoughtful of those around you.

Get to know your neighbors. Wherever you live, take time to introduce yourself to your neighbors and get to know them. Exchange contact info so you can keep in touch if anything comes up.

Pay attention to noise levels. You could be ticketed for unreasonable noise at any time of day.

Register your party. Off-Campus Life and the ��ý�� Police Department have partnered to provide a registration program that will give you a 20-minute notification, instead of an immediate police dispatch, if your residence receives a noise complaint.

Follow fireworks and open burning restrictions. ��ý�� is still at a high wildfire risk during the winter. Fireworks pose a significant fire risk and can cause substantial noise disruption to residential areas. The city of ��ý�� and ��ý�� County prohibit possessing or discharging all fireworks, firecrackers or skyrockets, and learn more about open burning restrictions.

Know about weather closures or delays

��ý��'s winter weather is often unpredictable, so it's best to be prepared for unexpected snow days. When campus is delayed or closed due to storms or icy conditions, CU ��ý�� will send email updates through the campus alert system. Want instant updates? Add your phone number in Buff Portal to get CU Alerts by text—it’s the fastest way to know what's happening before you even roll out of bed.

Commuting in winter isn’t always smooth, and sometimes weather or traffic can mess with your class schedule. If you realize you’ll be late or miss a class, don’t stress—reach out to your professors as soon as possible. Let them know what’s going on and ask about options for making up assignments or catching up. Professors know winter happens, so communicating early helps keep you on track for the semester.

Register your bike at any campus bike station for free tune-ups and quick fixes. Want an effortless ride? ��ý��’s BCycle e-bike program is your ticket—grab a bike near major bus stops and cruise around town. Even better: your BCycle membership is free, thanks to the Environmental Center! Activate your membership and pedal past traffic while earning major sustainability points.

The end of the semester is almost here, and now is the time to make the most of your meal plan. Residence hall meal plans include Munch Money. The funds use a declining balance stored on your Buff OneCard that renews each semester. Any unused Munch Money at the end of the semester expires and does not roll over to the following term.

Don’t let your Munch Money go to waste. Instead, use your funds before they expire.

How Munch Money works

Munch Money gives students with residence hall meal plans more flexibility in dining options. Your meal plan determines the amount of money allocated. You can use the funds in cafes and retail outlets on campus. You can also use Munch Money to purchase meals in the dining halls.

If you use all of your Munch Money for the semester, you can add funds to your Buff OneCard as Campus Cash. You can check your balance online.

Ways to use Munch Money before the semester ends

You have several options to use your Munch Money.

Skip the dining center for a meal and eat at one of the restaurants or cafes on campus.
Buy a friend lunch at one of the campus dining centers or grab-n-gos.
Stock up on snacks, drinks, toiletries and even CU apparel from a campus retail location.

Remember to use your Munch Money before it expires. Campus Cash does not expire.

Explore different options

Check out different neighborhoods and housing options to see what fits your lifestyle and budget. Some favorite spots for students in ��ý�� are The Hill, Martin Acres, East Aurora, Goss Grove and North ��ý��. You might also want to look into places in nearby cities like Longmont, Superior, Louisville or Lafayette—these areas have bus routes that make getting to campus easy.

Get free legal advice

A lease is a legal contract that students should understand before signing. Before signing a lease, you can schedule an appointment with attorney Bruce Sarbaugh through Off-Campus Life for a free lease review before signing. Students can also get free legal advice on other rental concerns, from lease agreements to landlord disputes.
