Biologist, author, and film producer Dr. Sean B. Carroll will discuss the discovery of the "The Serengeti Rules," the ecological rules that regulate the numbers and kinds of animals and plants in any given place, and how they are being applied to restore some of the greatest wildernesses on the planet.
About Dr. Sean B. Carroll
Sean B. Carroll is an internationally recognized biologist, award-winning author, Emmy- and Peabody-winning film producer, and education leader.
Carroll鈥檚 pioneering scientific research has centered on the genes that control animal body patterns and play major roles in the evolution of animal diversity. For his scientific contributions, he has received the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Life Sciences and been elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the European Molecular Biology Organization, as well as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Carroll is the author of six books for general audiences, including The Serengeti Rules, Brave Genius, The Making of the Fittest, Endless Forms Most Beautiful, A Series of Fortunate Events, and Remarkable Creatures, which was a finalist for the National Book Award for Nonfiction. Carroll also wrote a regular feature, 鈥淩emarkable Creatures,鈥 for The New York Times Science Times. In 2016, he received the Lewis Thomas Prize for Writing about Science.
Carroll led the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Department of Science Education from 2010 to 2023 and was the architect of HHMI鈥檚 filmmaking initiative to create compelling stories about science and nature for classrooms and global audiences. He founded and served as Head of Tangled Bank Studios, where he was executive producer of more than 50 feature or educational films, including All That Breathes, the first film to win Best Documentary at Sundance, Cannes and London, which went on to earn an Academy Award nomination; and three Emmy Award鈥搘inning documentaries鈥The Farthest, The Hunt for the Oldest DNA, and The Serengeti Rules, the latter based on Carroll鈥檚 book of the same title.听
