To wrap up National Hispanic Heritage Month, we want to highlight Nuria Fernandez's positive contributions to the transportation sector: became the first Afro-Latina to lead the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) in 2021. Her work across multiple agencies, such as the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Chicago Transit Authority, has improved transportation access and accessibility.

Under Fernandez’s leadership, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority completed the first Bay Area Rapid Transit heavy rail service and obtained federal approval for its and expansion in service.
