But over time, I鈥檝e found that the stronger your fundamentals and the better your communication skills, the more doors will open.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淥ur students aren鈥檛 just preparing to perform鈥攖hey鈥檙e learning to create, to connect and to forge their own paths in music.鈥</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>He adds, 鈥淚f piano was the instrument of the 19th century, percussion was the instrument of the 20th. The next step is depth鈥攕upporting underrepresented composers, finding excellent new works and creating music that reflects a 21st-century aesthetic.鈥</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span><strong>A community of access, opportunity + collaboration</strong></span><br><span>Students in the College of Music鈥檚 percussion program often remark on their growth, and how connected they feel to both faculty and the professional world around them.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淭hey鈥檙e surprised how much better they get, so quickly,鈥 Tetreault says. 鈥淥ften, they haven鈥檛 realized how connected the five core areas are鈥攁nd how work on one instrument strengthens all the others.鈥</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Students鈥 growth is fueled by the program鈥檚 accessibility. Tetreault and his colleague, Associate Professor Carl Dixon, both live and work in 抖阴传媒在线 full time. 鈥淪uch ready access to faculty, instruments, performances and professional opportunities is something students don鈥檛 necessarily expect,鈥 he says.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>From their first semester, students perform in orchestras, wind symphonies, a classical percussion ensemble and CU 抖阴传媒在线鈥檚 samba bateria鈥攁 Brazilian-style group that learns entirely by ear. They also take part in recording projects, community gigs and teaching opportunities across the region.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淓very year, we also commission a new piece from a CU 抖阴传媒在线 student composer,鈥 says Tetreault. 鈥淲e have competition seminars, collaborations with faculty from other departments and visits from some of the best percussionists in the country.鈥</span></p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-large"><div class="ucb-callout-content"> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/music/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2025-12/Kathryn%20Bistodeau-2025-PercussionEnsemble1.jpg?itok=c1ITDmci" width="1500" height="1125" alt="Percussion"> </div> <p><em>Photo credit: Kathryn Bistodeau</em></p></div></div><p dir="ltr"><span>Guest artists this year include Los Angeles Philharmonic Principal Percussionist Matt Howard; the drummer for NBC鈥檚 鈥淭he Voice,鈥 Nate Morton and many others; and, just last month, the CU 抖阴传媒在线 Percussion Ensemble presented a concert of Brazilian music featuring guest artist Jorge Alab锚, a renowned master of the genre. The program included styles such as choro (instrumental music), Candombl茅 drumming and song (a sacred Afro-Brazilian tradition), samba de roda (call-and-response singing with improvised drumming), pagode (backyard party music) and samba enredo (drumming and song performed by samba schools in Carnaval parades), illustrating the history, evolution and musical connections of these African diasporic art forms. Later that week, six current students and several CU 抖阴传媒在线 alumni traveled to the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) where they presented much of the same repertoire during Dixon鈥檚 Featured Showcase performance with mestre Alab锚. 鈥淭he concert was electrifying!鈥 shares Tetreault.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淲e鈥檙e also doing a collaborative recording project with CU 抖阴传媒在线 Thompson Jazz Studies next semester,鈥 adds Tetreault. 鈥淭hese kinds of collaborations and projects are going to define the percussion program moving forward.鈥</span></p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-xlarge"><div class="ucb-callout-content"> <div class="align-center image_style-large_image_style"> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/music/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2025-12/Percussion%20word%20cloud.png?itok=qWxXpy49" width="1500" height="735" alt="Percussion word cloud"> </div> </div> </div></div><p dir="ltr"><span><strong>Camaraderie, excellence + passion</strong></span><br><span>To capture the studio鈥檚 culture, Tetreault asked students to describe their goals in a word cloud鈥攁 visual that enlarges each word the more often it鈥檚 shared. The most prominent themes were 鈥渃amaraderie,鈥 鈥渆xcellence鈥 and 鈥減assion.鈥</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淲e should work hard, believe in what we're doing and have fun together,鈥 he says. 鈥淓xcellence grows naturally when you鈥檙e fully engaged and enjoying the work and each other.鈥</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>That energy carries into studio life鈥攆rom shared dinners before concerts to playful events like a percussion 鈥渕aintenance Olympics鈥 at the start of the year. Students split into teams of three to assemble cymbal stands while Tetreault provided running color commentary鈥攁nd, of course, there were prizes for the fastest team.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淲e foster a work-hard, play-hard atmosphere,鈥 Tetreault says. 鈥淲hen we鈥檙e working, it鈥檚 demanding and productive, but there鈥檚 also plenty of laughter and camaraderie along the way.鈥</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span><strong>The heart of it all: Love for music</strong></span><br><span>In considering prospective students, Tetreault says the program values personality as much as performance. 鈥淭he number one thing we鈥檙e looking for鈥攁long with a standard of excellence in playing鈥攊s personality,鈥 he says. 鈥淧eople who are collaborative, who help others and who love music.鈥</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>He emphasizes that the studio environment is best suited for curious, motivated percussionists who embrace all areas of the craft. 鈥淲e give a lot of time, a lot of energy, a lot of resources and a lot of inspiration鈥攚e hope鈥攖o everybody,鈥 he says. 鈥淲e also recognize that to be successful, students need to generate a lot of that energy and enthusiasm themselves.鈥&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Tetreault concludes, 鈥淧ercussion doesn鈥檛 need to apologize for itself anymore. In addition to winning first prize ($2,000), Nelson鈥攁 student of Tak谩cs Quartet members Harumi Rhodes and Edward Dusinberre鈥攁lso earned the $250 audience favorite prize.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淚鈥檓 immensely grateful to Harumi Rhodes and Edward Dusinberre for their guidance,鈥 Nelson says. 鈥淚t was a privilege to share the stage with my pianist, Gabrielle Lowman, who made the learning process so enjoyable.鈥</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Flute and piccolo player Mallory Wood, a student of Professor of Flute Christina Jennings, won second prize ($1,000). More broadly, the performance will represent the ways that the College of Music is evolving: Even as Barnett and Socolofsky bring their original compositions to the stage, opportunities for students鈥 self-expression as musicians, songwriters and artists are continually expanding.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淲e were excited when Mike and Annika proposed their event for the Faculty Tuesdays series because it gives us the chance to more fully highlight the diversity of work being done at the CU 抖阴传媒在线 College of Music,鈥 says CU Presents Executive Director Andrew Metzroth. 鈥淚t also gave us an opportunity to stretch the boundaries of what can happen in Grusin Music Hall.鈥&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Specifically, Metzroth helped support audio engineering and supplemental lighting鈥攁s well as the extra funds needed to support a rock-style concert. CU Presents in general manages event promotions and programs including for all Faculty Tuesday events.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淢ike and I are both so excited to bring songwriting to the Faculty Tuesdays series,鈥 says Socolofsky. The event will feature 10 of her original songs as well as Socolofsky鈥檚 queer, country and Western alter-ego EmmyJean Jenkins.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淲e鈥檙e starting two brand-new degree programs here at the College of Music:&nbsp;</span><a href="/music/music-production-songwriting" rel="nofollow"><span>Songwriting and Music Production</span></a><span>. We hope we鈥檙e the first of many songwriting Faculty Tuesdays that showcase the ways that the college鈥檚 offerings are branching out.鈥</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Socolofsky will be joined onstage by an ensemble that includes Trace Hybertson on fiddle, isele phoenix harper on keyboards, alumnus Ilan Blanck (MM 鈥23) on guitar and Nicole Patrick on drums for a program including 鈥渁 rather thorough needling of the patriarchy along with quite a few jokes about men named Brad ... or Brock ... or Brice ... or some name like that.鈥</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Barnett鈥檚 portion of the program will draw on collaborations with Jazz Studies Lecturer Enion Pelta-Tiller on vocals and fiddle, Fritz Gearhart on fiddle and Assistant Teaching Professor of Percussion Carl Dixon on percussion for a showcase of eight of his original songs (plus one cover).&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Barnett is an active musician in the 抖阴传媒在线 community and beyond; he鈥檚 a regular attendee of local songwriting sessions and performs his self-described brand of 鈥淥utlaw Folk鈥 in open mics and community performances. Like Socolofsky, he views this event as a chance not only to bring his music to the CU 抖阴传媒在线 campus, but to contribute to a deeper shift鈥攊n terms of focus, access and expression鈥攊n the entire community.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淲e鈥檙e launching these new degree programs and we鈥檙e also in the process of building a multitrack studio,鈥 he adds. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 going to open doors for all of our students. While performance opportunities brought them to the festival, Tanner says the networking and bonding with the broader trombone community were additional highlights.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淚t's not just about the playing and the level of their performance,鈥 explains Tanner. 鈥淚t's more about the people part, and the hang.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淲atching the students connect鈥攕haring meals, grabbing coffee, playing duets and exchanging ideas鈥攚as inspiring. And my teacher, Bradley Palmer, was really a figurehead in the trombone community.鈥</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>As College of Music ITF participants readied for the festival, Tanner asked Palmer to conduct a piece on the students鈥 recital. 鈥淚t was really special because when the students played the first piece, I鈥檓 standing backstage with my former teacher and he鈥檚 like, 鈥楳an, they sound really great. This is what you鈥檝e always dreamed of, and I'm excited that you're getting to experience that now鈥,鈥 Tanner shares.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>He hopes to involve more students in the ITF in the future. For now, he鈥檚 excited to be getting back to work with his studio and building on the impact of their ITF experiences. 鈥淵ou never know what they picked up on鈥攎aybe it's something that's not even related to playing the trombone, you know? I'm excited to speak with the students as we get started and know like, okay, that really stuck with you? So you鈥檙e really dealing with an incredibly high level of skill and artistry.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淭his is a really wonderful group of people, too鈥攖hey have a sense of humor. And they love coming to 抖阴传媒在线, meeting students and sharing what they know.鈥</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Participating members of The Cleveland Orchestra will team up with their instrument鈥檚 faculty counterpart at the College of Music for studio classes, lessons and coachings. For Silver, a standout event on the schedule is a side-by-side rehearsal with the CU 抖阴传媒在线 Symphony Orchestra.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淚 think that鈥檚 one of the linchpins, because the orchestra is playing big orchestral repertoire鈥攁nd not only do The Cleveland Orchestra members know these pieces well, but they鈥檝e played them dozens of times in their lives,鈥 he explains. 鈥淪o they鈥檙e full of experience about the pieces, and how to be more artistic, responsive and professional in an orchestra at a high level.鈥</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>According to Silver, the impact of the residency on students is tangible: They come away fired up and eager to put their new ideas and advice into practice.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淪omebody who plays in an orchestra at this level all the time will bring insights, wisdom, suggestions, ideas about practice and approaches to the music that are unique鈥攁nd that would be hard for our students to get anywhere else,鈥 he says.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>There鈥檚 also a personal connection for Silver, who grew up attending The Cleveland Orchestra concerts. 鈥淚 used to hear the orchestra every week when I was in middle school and high school,鈥 he reflects. 鈥淚t took me a few years to realize when I would go other places and come back how fortunate I was. This year鈥檚 adjudicator panel鈥攃omprising Dairy Arts Center Executive Director Melissa Fathman, Colorado Symphony member Nick Davies and myself鈥攃onsidered 27 applicants and awarded 16 grants totaling just over $6,200. I sat down with a few of these students to learn about their projects and how the grants helped fuel their success:</span></p> <div class="align-left image_style-small_500px_25_display_size_"> <div class="imageMediaStyle small_500px_25_display_size_"> <img loading="lazy" src="/music/sites/default/files/styles/small_500px_25_display_size_/public/2025-05/Grace_Stringfellow.png?itok=KR7X_rQ1" width="375" height="484" alt="Grace Stringfellow"> </div> </div> <p dir="ltr"><span><strong>Electronic oboe piece</strong></span><br><span>When Grace Stringfellow discovered composer Gracie Fagan鈥檚 work, they knew they had to work together. Stringfellow, a DMA student in oboe performance and pedagogy, first discovered Fagan (MM 鈥25) through an Instagram post of a piece she wrote for Assistant Professor of Saxophone Nathan Mertens.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淚t was a really good example of her compositional style. She鈥檚 very into using electronics, live processing and other more modern sounds,鈥 Stringfellow says. 鈥淪he鈥檚 inspired by EDM and other dance musics.鈥&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>They then reached out to Fagan about writing a piece for oboe鈥攕omething that would bring the repertoire into the present and showcase more extended techniques on the instrument. The ECM grant helped Stringfellow to compensate Fagan for the project.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淭he main motivation was to create something that feels modern鈥攖hat feels like something you would hear on the radio, something that鈥檚 singable, maybe has a little bit of improvisation,鈥 they say. 鈥淭hrowing everything out of the window of what is expected.鈥</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Stringfellow and Fagan worked together to come up with inspiration for the piece, creating a collaborative and integrative process that Stringfellow says is unique from their commission experiences in the past.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淭his feels like almost,&nbsp;almost&nbsp;co-writing. Obviously, she鈥檚 doing the body of the work, but it feels like co-writing and co-creating which is fantastic.鈥</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>The completed piece will be six or seven short movements, reflecting the shorter songs heard in pop music. Stringfellow plans to premiere the work at a&nbsp;</span><a href="/music/events/student-performances/student-recitals" rel="nofollow"><span>recital in October</span></a><span>, then hopes to perform at other local venues as well. On Nov. 19, the Koa Quartet performed selections from works by Joseph Haydn and Kevin Lau, and was awarded $2,000 for their Ekstrand win.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>鈥淲e are so happy to have started our residency at CU 抖阴传媒在线 on such a positive note! It was an incredible opportunity to perform onstage alongside so many of our talented peers,鈥 Pernick says. 鈥淭hank you so much to the Tak谩cs Quartet and string faculty for their mentorship, and to the Ekstrand family for their generous support of students.鈥</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Lee shares, 鈥淥ur main goal of the performance was to have fun and keep up the good energy. I think us dancing backstage helped with that. But in all seriousness, we鈥檙e super thankful for the win!鈥</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Second prize ($1,000) went to saxophonist Joel Ferst, who also won the audience favorite prize ($250). The competition invites top graduate students to compete for cash prizes for professional development. Around him were a handful of bored players, earning another paycheck. 鈥淏ut regardless of whether it鈥檚 a rehearsal or a gig, it鈥檚 important to always put forth your best effort,鈥 says the trombonist and composer/arranger extraordinaire. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 what I told the kids at Indianola last month: 鈥榊ou鈥檝e got to play full power all the time. Give it 100% effort.鈥欌&nbsp;</p><p>McKee was referring to his recent visit to Indianola High School: On Feb. 17, his high school alma mater inaugurated the Paul McKee Jazz Festival, rebranded in tribute to an illustrious alumnus. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a huge honor and a big event,鈥 he explains. 鈥淔orty bands competed in the festival鈥攆rom middle school to high school.&nbsp;</p><p>鈥淣ext year, I鈥檓 going to write a piece for the Indianola High School Jazz Band鈥攁nd maybe come back and play something.鈥 This year, McKee served as a guest judge.</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-xlarge"><div class="ucb-callout-content"> <div class="imageMediaStyle medium_750px_50_display_size_"> <img loading="lazy" src="/music/sites/default/files/styles/medium_750px_50_display_size_/public/article-image/428601193_10223560799625196_6628029483774013727_n.jpeg?itok=UK9HfIpD" width="750" height="563" alt="McKee speaks with the Indianola High School Wind Ensemble sharing stories and life advice. Photo courtesy: Indianola High School Band."> </div> <p><em>McKee speaks with the Indianola High School Wind Ensemble sharing stories and life advice.</em><br><em>Photo courtesy: Indianola High School Band</em>.</p></div></div><p>Being recognized in this way invites reflection on an unusual life in music鈥攐ne in which McKee nimbly juggles academics with exciting experiences in jazz performance including a stint with the legendary Woody Herman鈥檚 Thundering Herd.&nbsp;</p><p>鈥淚 always wanted to play,鈥 he says. 鈥淏ut I felt that getting a college degree would be a wise choice, so I earned music education and composition degrees. I later had the opportunity to send an audition tape to the Woody Herman band. That was in 1984.&nbsp;</p><p>鈥淚 had sought out opportunities to go out on the road鈥攕o when they brought me on board, I was ecstatic. It was one of the big deals of my lifetime.鈥&nbsp;</p><p>McKee鈥檚 years as a traveling musician still serve as a valuable experience to share with his students. 鈥淚 always strive to teach by example,鈥 he points out. 鈥淚 give them the ball and let them run with it.鈥</p><p>On May 9, McKee鈥檚 impact will extend beyond the classroom to the <a href="/commencement/" rel="nofollow">university commencement ceremony</a> at Folsom Field stadium, premiering his new arrangement of the familiar theme from Sir Edward Elgar鈥檚 Pomp &amp; Circumstance March No. 1 In D (1901), performed and recorded by students in the college鈥檚 Thompson Jazz Studies Program. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a contemporary arrangement in three parts capturing the diversity of our graduates and our campus community,鈥 explains McKee. 鈥淵ou鈥檒l hear a big band rendition of the march, then in the Latin montuno style and finally in the New Orleans style that should lighten things up for everybody.鈥</p><p>This eclectic musical mix both mirrors McKee鈥檚 approach to life and the lessons he imparts in his teaching, and reflects the College of Music鈥檚 <a href="/music/about-us" rel="nofollow">universal musician mission</a>: 鈥淭he more skills you have, the stronger a candidate you are for finding interesting, interdisciplinary work,鈥 he says. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 what I reinforce in mentoring my students. On March 19, he鈥檒l talk with my songwriters and that night he鈥檒l do a<a href="https://cupresents.org/performance/1707106422/cu-music/master-class/" rel="nofollow"> drumming technique master class</a> that鈥檚 open to the public. On March 20, he鈥檒l work with student composers on improvising.鈥</p><p>While the residency lasts only two days, the experience can resonate much longer for young students, Barnett suggests鈥攋ust as Wackerman鈥檚 drumming with Zappa influenced him. That thought brings him to the College of Music鈥檚<a href="/music/about-us" rel="nofollow"> universal musician mission</a>.</p><p>鈥淎 musician these days needs as many skills as possible,鈥 explains Barnett, himself an artist-composer-songwriter-educator. 鈥淎s an artist, you can grow throughout your entire life. And what we鈥檙e accomplishing here at the College of Music can be an example to inspire students. If they branch out while they鈥檙e here, they will be ahead of the game when they graduate.&nbsp;</p><p>鈥淚t鈥檚 about more than getting good grades. It鈥檚 about making your inner self larger. College is just the beginning of your life in learning.鈥</p><p>Barnett鈥檚 experience in the music business still fires his imagination鈥攁nd is key to the College of Music鈥檚<a href="https://www.dailycamera.com/2024/02/15/cu-boulder-to-offer-music-production-beginning-in-2025/" rel="nofollow"> new degree emphasis in music production</a>. He also calls up his vast experience and connections in the world of rock 鈥榥鈥 roll to bring his students up close to musicians from the outside world.</p><p><a href="/music/mike-barnett" rel="nofollow">Barnett鈥檚 impressive r茅sum茅</a> further includes songwriting and drumming work for 30 years with numerous rock, heavy metal and classical fusion bands with such exotic names as Tainted Saint, Phantom Crew, Terminal Degree and Throttle.</p><p>Barnett鈥檚 compositions include chamber works, concertos for piano and violin, pieces for wind ensemble, solo works and songs鈥攎usic that has been performed by various orchestras and ensembles around the world. Closer to home, he鈥檚 collaborated with College of Music colleagues Erika Eckert, David Korevaar, David Requiro, Michael Thornton and particularly the late Charles Wetherbee.</p><p>All that said, one of his first loves is teaching and his commitment to one-on-one mentoring. 鈥淚 enjoy creating a welcoming environment for all my students,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 teach the history of rock music. I also teach a songwriting class for non-music majors. He was 31.<p>鈥淲hile I am deeply saddened by the news of Ben鈥檚 passing, I fondly remember his passion for music and his love for teaching,鈥 says Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies + Enrollment Management and Associate Professor of Conducting + Music Education Matthew Roeder.</p><p>鈥淏en鈥檚 dedication to music students and music education was recognized by his being named the Colorado Music Educators Association鈥檚 Young Teacher of the Year in 2019. His commitment to his students was rightly acknowledged early on in his teaching career by being honored as the first-ever recipient of this award.鈥</p><blockquote><p class="lead"><em>鈥淭eaching music is the most important thing I do,鈥 said Pollack five years ago in <a href="/music/2019/01/08/alumni-spotlight-ben-pollack" rel="nofollow">an interview celebrating his CMEA award</a>. 鈥淚t has to matter every day.鈥</em></p></blockquote><p>Pollack was the recipient of a full out-of-state tuition scholarship from the 抖阴传媒在线 where he earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in music education. As an undergrad, he was principal chair of the CU 抖阴传媒在线 Symphonic Band euphonium section and tuba/euphonium ensemble. Pollack was also a member of our Golden Buffalo Marching Band and the CU Buffoons, one of the state鈥檚 premiere a cappella groups.&nbsp;</p><p>鈥淪uffering the loss of a student鈥攃urrent or former鈥攊s in many ways akin to losing a child,鈥 reflects Associate Professor of Tuba + Euphonium Michael Dunn with whom Pollack studied. 鈥淲hen I heard about Ben鈥檚 passing, my first reaction was shock followed closely by gratitude鈥攈e was by all measures an extraordinary student.&nbsp;</p><p>鈥淏en was truly born to teach. Our lessons often revolved around how to deliver a view of the 鈥榖igger picture鈥 to students.&nbsp;He wanted his students to have a sense of their place in the world and for each of them to understand that they are capable of changing the world for the better. Ben happened to use music as his vehicle to deliver this message.鈥</p><p>Pollack continued his pursuit of excellence by earning a master鈥檚 degree in music education from the Jacobs School of Music at the University of Indiana, Bloomington, where he was principal chair of the IU Concert Band euphonium section.</p><p>As a band and choral music educator with a track record of success, Pollack sought to influence large-scale changes in education through music and community. Upon graduating from our College of Music, Pollack taught choir music at Carmel Middle School in Colorado Springs and later embraced the challenge of building up a music program in Walsenburg, Colorado, leaving an indelible mark on the students and community whose lives he touched and transformed.
