Becca Siever
Becca Clark Siever is a white, able-bodied, cisgender, heterosexual woman. Becca鈥檚 ancestors voluntarily immigrated to the United States from a smattering of Western European countries during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Some settled in the north, and some settled in the south. Becca鈥檚 ancestors could own property, access the G.I. Bill after serving in WWII, qualify for mortgages, create generational wealth, and simply exist without fear of being unfairly funneled into the criminal legal system.
Becca holds degrees in Economics, Religion, and Law. Recognizing that this educational privilege derives from unjust colonial capitalism, Becca pursues opportunities for reparations, healing, transformation, liberation, and disrupting anti-Blackness. 听Above all, Becca strives for honesty and authenticity 鈥 with herself and others.
Some experiences that inform Becca鈥檚 approach to teaching Legislative Analysis, Writing, and Advocacy听include witnessing ICE raids in North Carolina in 2008, the repeal of the death penalty in Colorado in 2020, the deforestation giving way to the development of Atlanta鈥檚 鈥淐op City鈥, and the LandBack and Rights of Nature movements.
Some beliefs that influence Becca鈥檚 relationships both in and outside of the classroom community include 鈥淗ope is a discipline鈥 (Mariame Kaba); 鈥淭he only way to build hope is through the Earth鈥 (Vandana Shiva); and 鈥淭he only way to survive is by taking care of one another鈥 (Grace Lee Boggs).
Becca loves imagining, exploring, and creating Liberatory Legislation听with the vibrant MENV community 鈥 especially with her coconspirator, Emmett Kaplan.听
