CollegeÌýOrientations & Requirements

The following sessions are mandatory for students in the College of Engineering and Applied Science:Ìý

  • Your department’s orientation for your degree program. This may vary from program to program, so be sure to confirm if it’s mandatory to attend if you have a conflict. See list of dates and times below.
  • If you have a research assistant or teaching assistant appointment and are a non-native English speaker, you must attend an RA/TA speaking test. See details below.Ìý

For International Students

Mandatory RA/TA English Speaking Test

The college requires that international students who will be supported on a RA or TA appointment take a brief English speaking test. This will assess how well you will be able to communicate with students and research colleagues at CU ¶¶Òõ´«Ã½ÔÚÏß. can be found on the International English Center website.

The assessment is administered through HireVue,a digital platform for one-way video interviews. Students respond to questions by answering on camera verbally, and their recorded answers are later reviewed by language experts. This allows you to complete it at a time and location that is convenient for you.

Ìý Ìý Ìý

Once you register, you will receive an email with a confirmed test time and Zoom instructions.

Based on your exam results, you may be required to complete U.S. English pronunciation training. If so, the college and your department will pay the cost for you to take Continuing Education course ESLG 1130:ÌýPronunciation for International Graduate Students.ÌýThis is a two-credit, 10-week course that meets twice weekly and will be required. This test and course are designed to equip students with the skill sets to best thrive during their graduate tenure—particularly in teaching and research environments that demand clear, effective communication. The college will not pay the tuition for this course if you receive a satisfactory test result but still wish to take the course. No substitute courses will be paid for by the college in lieu of ESLG 1130.
