Alferd Packer

How the Grill got its Name聽

A 1960s CU alum who聽was in the UMC鈥檚 Alferd聽Packer Grill recently聽asked a student if she聽knew who Packer was.

鈥淎n early CU president?鈥澛爏he replied聽hopefully.聽

How soon they forget.聽

OK, gather round聽ye who never heard聽the tale, and I鈥檒l sing of聽Alferd Packer, and how聽the UMC grill came to聽bear his name.聽

But first, confession聽time: I had something to聽do with it. OK, a lot to聽do with it. The naming,聽that is. I never met Packer.聽Fortunately.聽

First off, Packer was聽not an early CU president.聽He was a cannibal.聽Like Hannibal Lecter, only聽with worse manners. And a better聽excuse 鈥 he was hungry.聽

Packer was part of a six-man prospecting聽party that got marooned in聽Colorado鈥檚 San Juan Mountains in the winter of 1873. Come spring, he聽emerged alone and surprisingly un-emaciated.聽He was eventually caught, tried聽and sentenced to hang for murder.聽

His claim to fame 聽comes from the聽sentence of doom pronounced upon聽him 鈥 as magnificently interpreted聽and imparted to a credulous media by a聽drunken bar-keep thusly:聽

鈥淪tand up, yah man-eatin鈥 son of a聽bitch, and receive your sintince!... They聽was siven Dimmycrats in Hinsdale County,聽but you, yah voracious, man-eatin鈥 son聽of a bitch, yah eat five of thim!鈥澛

Fast forward to the spring of 1968.聽I鈥檓 sitting in the grill with my BFF,聽student body president Paul Talmey聽(A&S鈥67; MBA鈥78) (I鈥檓 his veep), and a聽couple of others. Someone at the table聽is grousing about the food.聽

鈥淲e otta鈥 name this place after Alferd聽Packer,鈥 I said brightly. (It was then聽called the Roaring Fork.)聽

鈥淲e could get the Student Assembly聽to do it,鈥 Talmey said.聽

The Student Assembly was new.聽Talmey and I had started it.聽

Five or six hundred students showed聽up for the next meeting, when I introduced聽a resolution renaming the grill聽for Packer and read the hanging speech.聽It passed unanimously.聽

I had a day job at the time 鈥 at聽United Press International鈥檚 Denver聽Bureau, as did another former聽Colorado Daily editor, Bob Ewegen聽(Jour鈥68; MS鈥72).聽

As soon as the vote happened I called聽Ewegen, who sent a story about it to聽UPI鈥檚 main bureau in New York.聽

Within 20 minutes it came blasting聽back on the 鈥淎鈥 wire, UPI鈥檚 premier聽breaking news wire with subscribers聽all over the world.聽

The year 1968 was tumultuous. The聽world needed a laugh.聽

And so did the CU Regents. They聽were so glad to see the students doing聽some campus high jinks instead of聽occupying Regent Hall that they immediately聽renamed the grill for Packer.聽
