Independent Study
Undergraduate research in the chemistry department typically takes the form of CHEM 4901 independent study credits for engaging in directed research in a faculty lab. There are two steps to pursuing independent study in chemistry. First, you must find a faculty sponsor who will agree to be your research advisor. The file linked below is a list of CHEM faculty who have expressed willingness to engage undergraduates in independent study. Often faculty will require that the student be concurrently pursuing an honors thesis, but not always. Also, there are faculty members who will sponsor undergraduate research who are not on this list. You may browse the faculty profiles on the chemistry website and email faculty directly to express your interest in doing research with their lab: /chemistry/peopleÌý
Once you have secured a faculty sponsor, the next step is to complete the CHEM 4901 independent study form, linked below. It is a PDF with fillable fields. When you have found a faculty sponsor to work with, please fill out this form, in consultation with your research advisor or lab PI and return to chemundergrad@colorado.edu. You may sign the form by simply typing your name and it will be forwarded to your research advisor for their electronic signature. Once the form has been completed and signed, the undergraduate program coordinator will register you for your CHEM 4901 independent study credits. NOTE: each credit of CHEM 4901 that you register for represents around three to four hours of work per week. Usually students register for no more than three credits (10–12 hours of work per week).
