CEAE Department News Highlights—Alumni Newsletter — June 2026

Letter from the Department Chair
Dear CEAE Alumni and Friends,
Welcome to our summer newsletter. With the season in full swing, campus has quieted down as students have headed off to internships, study abroad programs, research opportunities and other summer experiences. Our faculty remain engaged in research, with some teaching summer courses, while also taking some well-deserved time to recharge. I hope you are finding time to relax, enjoy the warm weather and make the most of the season.
The spirit of innovation and impact was on display earlier this month when we welcomed 830 researchers, educators and industry professionals from around the world for the(EMI 2026), the premier annual mechanics conference of theAmerican Society of Civil Engineers. Hosted at CU ý and led by ProfessorsMija Hubler ԻYida Zhang, the conference featured more than 100 sessions on topics ranging from structural health monitoring, AI and machine learning, data-driven modeling, advanced materials and industry challenges.
This coming Fall, we are excited to launch several new academic opportunities. We welcome the first cohort of students in our new, an intensive nine-month program in collaboration with the CU Leeds School of Business, designed for professionals and recent graduates seeking expertise in sustainable energy, infrastructure, materials and building design.
In addition, the Building Energy, Building Decarbonization and Structural Engineering subplans within ourArchitectural Engineering Professional MS program are now available in fully online (synchronous and asynchronous) and hybrid formats, alongside our traditional on-campus option. We have also launched a newSustainability Engineering minor, available to all CU ý engineering undergraduates with a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
In October, I would like to invite you. The event at CU ý will feature invited presentations from colleagues and former students, as well as student poster presentations.
To help alumni stay connected with the department, we recently launched a Faculty Speaker Series that can be accessed from anywhere. The series highlights the impactful research of our faculty while providing a unique opportunity to stay connected to the pulse of CEAE. Last semester we heard about research on Ի. Watch for details on our fall speakers in the coming months.
Below are links to stories that showcase the breadth and impact of our research and teaching. From AI-driven flood forecasting, to glowing algae that generate light without electricity, these stories highlight the innovative work happening across our department. And for the second consecutive year, a CEAE faculty member is featured on the cover ofCU Engineering magazine (CUE), which should be arriving in your mailbox soon.
Finally, follow CEAE on to stay connected with our alumni and research community, with almost 900 followers and growing. With CU ý ending its alumni email service on Aug. 31, 2026, please take a moment to with the Alumni Association to ensure you continue receiving news and updates from our department, the college and the university.
