The Tibetan & Himalayan Cultural Festival in Longmont brings together food, film, photography, and dance.

Join us at 2pm on Saturday, September 20th at the Longmont Museum & Cultural Center for a special screening of Honey Giver Among the Dogs (Monmo Tashi Kyidren), directed by Dechen Roder. About the film: In remote Bhutan, an undercover detective investigates the case of a missing Buddhist nun and falls into a risky alliance with his only suspect - an alluring woman known as the village “demoness.”

Film starts at 2:15pm. There will be light refreshments, chai and momos (dumplings), before the film begins and time for Q&A after the film with Professors Padma ‘tsho (Southwest Minzu University) and Holly Gayley (CU ��ý��). There is a special photo and woodcut exhibit to enjoy in conjunction with the film, and the chance to try out Tibetan circle dance to conclude the festival.

Program Overview

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming the global language industry, redefining translation, interpretation, and accessibility. For higher education — especially programs in languages, business, and international affairs — the question is clear: how do we prepare students to thrive in professions that AI is already reshaping?

In this presentation, David Utrilla will share insights from 30 years as Founder and CEO of U.S. Translation Company and showcase live demonstrations of cutting-edge AI tools currently being used across the industry. Attendees will see firsthand how these technologies increase speed, quality, and reach — while also raising important questions about ethics, employment, and the role of human expertise.

Key topics include:

How AI is disrupting traditional language professions and creating new career pathways.
The irreplaceable role of human intelligence in culture, context, and trust — and why it matters for curriculum design.
Real-world demonstrations of AI in translation, interpretation, and accessibility — the technologies transforming global business today.

About the Speaker

David Utrilla studied international business and economics in Peru and in the USA. In 1995, he founded U.S. Translation Company and currently serves as its CEO. His company has been recognized with multiple awards, including Utah’s Best of State, listed six times in the Inc. 5000 for the fastest-growing companies in America, Mountain West Capital Network’s top 100 fastest-growing companies in Utah, and the SBA’s Small Businessperson of the Year.

He has completed executive programs at Harvard Business School, Stanford University, and the University of Washington, and has spoken at major industry conferences, including LOCWorld, GALA, and ALC. David has received multiple awards from universities, Chambers of Commerce, and the State of Utah for his entrepreneurial success and community contributions. He serves on fifteen boards of directors across various sectors, including business, finance, education, nonprofits, and international organizations. In 2009, he was appointed by the President of Peru as the Honorary Consul of Peru in Utah, a position he held until December 2024.

Rocky Mountain CIBER (RMCIBER)

This lecture is hosted by the Rocky Mountain CIBER (RMCIBER) Network, a consortium of over 80 schools in the Rocky Mountain region (states include: Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Utah), co-led by CU Denver and BYU CIBERs. RMCIBER provides members with opportunities for faculty research and course development grants, program participation scholarships, and supports the development of educational programs at participating academic institutions. We’re pleased to announce that a new cycle of the MAP Academy & Nalli Fellowships will open to applications soon. Designed to support research and practice in South Asia’s diverse textile traditions, the Fellowship is born out of a collaboration between MAP Academy and Nalli Silks, a heritage textile brand based in India.

Programme Details:

Four fellowships, each with a grant of INR 5,50,000, will be awarded.

The programme is open to a wide range of people, from individuals to collectives, from researchers to practitioners. We’re hoping to receive applications on a range of subjects, and these include:

Histories of clothing and costume
Community or personal textile archives
Textiles in religious or liturgical contexts
Environmental impact of textile production and consumption
Endangered or disappearing textile traditions
Critical perspectives on revivalism
Labour in textile production, with a focus on caste, class, and gender
Textiles in relation to other cultural forms — storytelling, poetry, music, architecture, and material culture
Textiles in the context of archaeological study
Textiles as symbols or metaphors in literature or mythology
Techniques and tools used in specific textile traditions

We’d be grateful if you could help share this opportunity with your networks — especially with students, researchers, designers, or institutions working with textiles and material culture.

"South Asian Forum on the Acquisition and Processing of Language (SAFAL)

The conference is supported by funding from the NSF as well as generous contributions from the Linguistics Department and the Institute of Cognitive Science.

The conference will be held (in hybrid modality) at the ��ý�� between 17-19 November 2025. It includes six state-of-the-art talks on the themes of language processing, multilingualism, literacy, and first language acquisition. Of special interest to students are two tutorial sessions on The documentation of child language in diverse communities and The processing of language in children with typical and atypical development.

We are accepting abstracts until 31 August 2025. Further details can be found on on the SAFAL abstract submissions site. We will announce the final program and begin conference registrations via our website in late September.

With support from the Henry Luce Foundation, the Southeast East Asian Language Council (SEALC) and the Graduate Education and Training in Southeast Asian Studies (GETSEA) consortia awards financial assistance to students who incur tuition fees when studying a Southeast Asian language via synchronous distance learning during the academic year at an institution other than their home institution. This award is intended to facilitate cross-institutional collaboration and increase access to Southeast Asian language instruction. Eligibility requires that the proficiency-oriented course is credit-bearing at a North American institution and that the applicant is a full-time student at a North American institution. Priority will be given to graduate students, but all are encouraged to apply. SEALC and GETSEA encourage applicants to consider attending the Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) which serves as an excellent resource for summer language instruction. This award is intended to improve access during the academic year so that students can obtain multi-year instruction in a timely manner.

What does the assistance cover?
The award provides tuition reimbursement, minus a modest contribution from the student, for synchronous distance learning of a SE Asian language taught by a lecturer at a North American institution. Applications for tutoring arrangements or courses taught by FLTAs will not be accepted.
