This funding gives us the ability to compare infant microbiomes across the globe using cutting-edge immunological and bioinformatics techniques. We hope this work will ultimately lead to the development of strategies to restore the infant microbiome to its historical state to prevent immune diseases before they start.鈥</p><p>Olm, who earned his bachelor鈥檚 degree at the University of Pittsburgh and his PhD at the University of California Berkeley, leads the <a href="/iphy/research/integrative-microbiome-research-laboratory" rel="nofollow">Integrative Microbiome Research Laboratory</a>, where he and his research colleagues study the human microbiome as 鈥渁n entire ecosystem of microscopic organisms that live on our skin and inside our body. These microbes are integrated into our immune, digestive and nervous systems and are critical to our overall wellbeing.鈥</p><p>Olm and his colleagues aim to increase understanding of the human microbiome and its connections to physiology and to apply these findings to improve human health using cutting-edge, computer-based analysis and experimental techniques to study the microbiome.</p><p>The lab鈥檚 current research topics include:</p><ul><li>From where do we get our microbiome? How do our microbes spread from person to person?</li><li>How does the infant gut microbiome influence the development of allergies and auto-immune disease?</li><li>How does our intestinal immune system control our gut microbiome? How do failures in this control lead to disease?</li></ul><p><strong>About the awards program</strong></p><p>Since it began, the Webb-Waring Biomedical Research Awards Program has supported 121 Boettcher Investigators, including this year鈥檚 class, and awarded almost $29 million in grant funding. These researchers have gone on to secure more than $150 million in additional research funding from federal, state and private sources. Chances are, visions of gleaming equipment, climate-controlled rooms, and the hum of precision instruments come to mind.&nbsp;</p><p>But what if that lab was really a century-old gymnasium plagued by electrical outages, noise and temperatures that swing with the seasons? Those are just some of the challenges <a href="/iphy/people/faculty/douglas-r-seals" rel="nofollow">Doug Seals</a> faced while establishing one of the most productive aging research programs in the country.&nbsp;</p><p>Seals, a distinguished professor in the 抖阴传媒在线 <a href="/iphy/" rel="nofollow">Department of Integrative Physiology</a>, recently published a memoir chronicling more than four decades in biomedical research. As an undergraduate, he majored in education and business administration hoping to coach football.&nbsp;</p><p>A research career wasn鈥檛 on his radar.&nbsp;</p><p>鈥淗owever, the program had a mandatory requirement to perform a research thesis, and I discovered that I really liked the research process,鈥 Seals says.&nbsp;</p><p>That discovery set him on the path to where he is today.&nbsp;</p><p>Seals went on to earn his PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, then completed his postdoctoral training at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and at the University of Iowa before landing his first faculty position. He would eventually join CU 抖阴传媒在线鈥檚 Department of Integrative Physiology (the Department of Kinesiology at the time) in 1992.&nbsp;</p><p>鈥淓ach stop along the journey provides a learning opportunity, and you take the new tool and add it to your toolbox,鈥 he reflects.&nbsp;</p><p>Seals鈥 new memoir details the unique trajectory of his career and how little of it was the byproduct of elite circumstances.&nbsp;</p><p>鈥淚 had no conventional mentoring in graduate school (I did not belong to a 鈥榣aboratory鈥), so I learned how to work on my own, independently,鈥 he says, 鈥渨hich turned out to be helpful later.鈥&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Bringing science to the gym</strong></p><p>The title of Seals鈥 memoir, <em>A Life of Science鈥擨n Gyms</em>, isn鈥檛 a metaphor. For 30 years, Seals and a small group of colleagues ran NIH -funded research programs out of <a href="https://calendar.colorado.edu/carlson_gymnasium" rel="nofollow">Carlson Gymnasium</a> on the CU 抖阴传媒在线 campus before moving out in 2020. The building, constructed in the 1920s, was never designed with biomedical research in mind.&nbsp;</p><p>Yet Seals and the other faculty found a way to make it work.</p><p>His idea for the book grew out of a period of reflection during the pandemic.&nbsp;</p><p>鈥淎s I was writing a series of personal commentaries during and post-pandemic, I began to think about penning a memoir of my unusual life of science in gyms,鈥 he says.&nbsp;</p><p>He started by authoring a historical scientific article about the Carlson years, then realized the story was bigger than could be told in a journal piece.&nbsp;</p><p>鈥淚 decided to expand that story to include my earlier life and more details about the challenges I have overcome, which necessitated the longer narrative format of a memoir.鈥&nbsp;</p><p>The stories he chose to include during the writing process are, by his own account, the ones readers may find most compelling, particularly how Seals and his colleagues built a top academic research department at CU 抖阴传媒在线.&nbsp;</p><p>鈥淔or example, I share how I obtained the funds to start the first research seminar series in the department . . . the challenges we faced performing NIH-funded research in an old gym designed for sport and how I eventually took matters into my own hands to upgrade our research facilities when the campus did not do so,鈥 he says.&nbsp;</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-large"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p>&nbsp;</p> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2026-05/A%20Life%20of%20Science%20in%20Gyms.jpg?itok=OGsJSAqr" width="1500" height="2261" alt="book cover of &quot;A Life of Science--in Gyms!&quot;"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text">In his memoir, Doug Seals details the "challenges we faced performing NIH-funded research in an old gym designed for sport."</p> </span> </div></div><p>Despite the conditions, his lab secured continuous NIH funding, produced more than 350 peer-reviewed publications and trained more than 300 scientists across career stages from undergraduate to junior faculty.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Living long and living well</strong></p><p>Woven through the memoir鈥檚 recap of institutional challenges is the science Seals has dedicated his career to. His lab鈥檚 central focus is the concept of extending 鈥渉ealthspan鈥濃攏ot just how long we live, but how long we live well.&nbsp;</p><p>鈥淚n biomedical aging research, 鈥榟ealthspan鈥 generally refers to the period of life that you retain good physical and cognitive function and are free of serious disease, whereas 鈥榣ifespan鈥 is the entire period of life,鈥 Seals explains.&nbsp;</p><p>He notes the two don鈥檛 always align. A long life shadowed by disability or chronic disease is a far different proposition than one that stays healthy into its final decades.&nbsp;</p><p>Seals has spent 40 years researching what tips the scale in favor of the latter.&nbsp;</p><p>Seals has clear advice for those seeking to improve their healthspan: 鈥淚f I could recommend that people do only one thing, it would be to exercise regularly鈥攖o be physically active. No other strategy comes close to exerting the health benefits of regular exercise on physical and cognitive function and prevention of chronic diseases,鈥 he says.&nbsp;</p><p>Diet, not smoking, and other factors matter.&nbsp;</p><p>鈥淏ut the effects of regular exercise cannot be fully mimicked by any other lifestyle behavior or pill,鈥 Seals adds.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>In control of your fate</strong></p><p>One of the more challenging aspects of writing the memoir, Seals admits, was choosing what to talk about.&nbsp;</p><p>鈥淭he most difficult challenge was trying to make the book compelling to both scientists and non-scientists. I wanted to provide a lot of 鈥榠nsider insight鈥 for the layperson, while not boring academics reading the story,鈥 he says.&nbsp;</p><p>Through his careful curation of stories, the message he hopes to land is straightforward.&nbsp;</p><p>鈥淭he main message of the memoir is that you don鈥檛 need to come from the most educated family background, attend the most elite institutes of higher education, join the faculty of a top-ranked department or have the best research facilities to achieve and sustain success in your profession,鈥 he says.&nbsp;</p><p>鈥淵ou are the 鈥榤aster of your fate,鈥 not your environment. Your determination, creativity and resilience are much more important to the outcome than external factors,鈥 Seals adds.&nbsp;</p><p>Seals lived this lesson before ever writing it down. While detection and treatment of TBI have improved over time, this has resulted in new challenges, because survivors may face additional health problems over time as a consequence of their injuries. These problems can include cognitive impairment and even neurodegeneration, including Alzheimer鈥檚. Considering this, there is an increased interest in what factors determine how well TBI patients recover.</span></p><p><a href="/neuroscience/rachel-k-rowe" rel="nofollow"><span>Rachel Rowe</span></a><span>, an assistant professor of </span><a href="/iphy/" rel="nofollow"><span>integrative physiology</span></a><span> at the 抖阴传媒在线, has investigated this question, along with a number of researchers from The Ohio State University and the University of Arizona College of Medicine, in&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2666354624000759" rel="nofollow"><span>a recent study</span></a><span> linking low-quality sleep following traumatic brain injury to cognitive impairment, persistent inflammation and delayed healing.&nbsp;</span></p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-medium"><div class="ucb-callout-content"> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2026-04/Rachel%20Rowe.jpg?itok=F4ujkdLG" width="1500" height="1651" alt="portrait of Rachel Rowe"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text"><span>Rachel Rowe, a CU 抖阴传媒在线 assistant professor of integrative physiology, collaborated on research linking low-quality sleep following traumatic brain injury to cognitive impairment, persistent inflammation and delayed healing.</span></p> </span> </div></div><p><span>The study used mice as a controlled experimental model to examine how sleep fragmentation interacts with traumatic brain injury, following the National Institutes of Health Guidelines for the Care and Use of Laboratory Mice, and with approval from Ohio State鈥檚 Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.</span></p><p><span><strong>Sleep fragmentation, inflammation and microglia</strong></span></p><p><span>The study did not look at total sleep loss, but instead at sleep fragmentation, which happens when sleep is repeatedly interrupted. Even brief awakenings can prevent the brain from staying asleep long enough to reach the deeper, more restorative stages of sleep. When sleep is broken up many times throughout the night, people may spend less time in these restorative phases, which are important for physical recovery and brain health. Unfortunately, fragmented sleep is common and can be caused by everyday factors such as noise, hospital monitoring, discomfort or changes in temperature.</span></p><p><span>鈥淔or instance,鈥 Rowe says, if someone is in the hospital for a moderate brain injury, 鈥渢hen there are a lot of people coming in, they鈥檙e checking monitors, they鈥檙e doing activities that could disrupt the sleep of a person.鈥&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Stress can also affect the quality of sleep. 鈥淲e have got a lot of things in our society that disrupt our sleep,鈥 Rowe says, and people do not always prioritize restful sleep after an injury. These types of disturbances may influence recovery following brain injury.</span></p><p><span>One reason for this is inflammation, which is a potential determiner of the long-term results of TBI, particularly whether it will result in neurodegeneration. Brain inflammation is an innate immune response initiated by cells called microglia. Similar to a fever, inflammation does not directly target infections, damaged cells or other threats but rather makes the body inhospitable to them. This allows for a quick response to potentially life-threatening challenges, but it can also damage the body if it goes on for too long. One reason that could happen is if the microglia are primed.</span></p><p><span>When the brain faces some kind of stress, like from an injury or from sleep fragmentation, the microglia become primed, meaning they respond more strongly to subsequent challenges.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>鈥淭here is some memory in your immune system,鈥 Rowe explains. 鈥淭hat is how vaccinations work. In the case of a brain injury, if it is mixed with sleep fragmentation, it is what we call a two-hit model.鈥 When both stressors come in short succession, 鈥渢hat can change what the microglia are doing,鈥 potentially resulting in a heightened or prolonged inflammatory response in the brain.</span></p><p><span><strong>Preparation and testing</strong></span></p><p><span>The mice were split into four groups. Some mice were given traumatic brain injuries using lateral fluid percussion injury, a well-established experimental model used to study TBI in rodents. Other mice were not given traumatic brain injuries, but were put through the same preparation process, so the only difference was that they went uninjured.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Additionally, some mice experienced sleep fragmentation while others did not. Ultimately, the groups were traumatic brain injury (TBI) with sleep fragmentation (SF), TBI without SF, uninjured with SF, and uninjured without SF. This design allowed the researchers to examine the independent and combined effects of injury and sleep disruption.</span></p><p><span>Sleep fragmentation was achieved through disturbances that happened automatically every two minutes for five hours</span> <span>per day during the early light phase, when mice normally obtain most of their sleep. All mice experienced a simulated light/dark cycle where each half lasted 12 hours. Sleep fragmentation began an hour before the end of the dark period and ended four hours after the beginning of the light period.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>鈥淢ice are nocturnal,鈥 Rowe says, 鈥渟o the study was designed to fragment their sleep right at the beginning of the light period, which is when mice normally get most of their sleep. In many ways, it鈥檚 similar to repeatedly waking a person just as they are trying to fall asleep at night.鈥&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>The mice鈥檚 sleep, including both when they were asleep and how long they stayed asleep, was measured using specialized piezoelectric sensors. This technology has been popularized recently through its use to generate electricity from people walking on piezoelectric tiles in places with heavy foot traffic in Japan. (Photo: Mart Production/Pexels)</span></p> </span> </div></div><p><span>鈥淲hen a mouse drops into sleep,鈥 Rowe explains, 鈥渢heir breathing gets really rhythmic at 3 hertz.鈥 The frequency of pressure created by that breathing was distinguished from the way mice breathe when they are resting using an algorithm.</span></p><p><span>Sleep fragmentation continued for 14 days following injury. After this period, mice were allowed to recover with normal sleep conditions, and researchers evaluated behavioral and molecular outcomes. One of the behavioral assessments used was the Morris Water Maze, a common test of spatial learning and memory in rodents. In this task, mice learn to locate a hidden platform in a pool using spatial cues in the environment. Their ability to remember and efficiently navigate to the platform reflects spatial memory performance.</span></p><p><span><strong>How good sleep improves outcomes</strong></span></p><p><span>When tested in the Morris water maze, mice with TBIs who also experienced sleep fragmentation used random search strategies, indicating that they did not learn the cues or that they did not remember them. This means that sleep fragmentation after this type of injury could impair spatial learning and memory.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>鈥淚f there are cognitive deficits, then the mouse is looking at those cues, but it does not know which one is near the platform. It is just searching randomly because it does not know what it is supposed to be doing,鈥 Rowe says.</span></p><p><span>Researchers also looked at what was happening inside the brains of the mice. They found that when brain injury was combined with disrupted sleep, the brain showed stronger signs of inflammation and less activity in the genes involved in repairing and rebuilding connections between brain cells. These connections, called synapses, allow brain cells to communicate with each other and are important for recovery after injury. In other words, poor sleep after a brain injury appeared to increase inflammation while slowing some of the brain鈥檚 natural repair processes. In contrast, mice that had a brain injury but were able to sleep normally showed stronger signs of these repair pathways being activated.</span></p><p><span>There were 14 days for the mice to recover from sleep fragmentation before these results were measured, and they had 30 days to recover from the injury itself. This indicates that the consequences were long-term or chronic.</span></p><p><span>&nbsp;鈥淲hen we are looking at rodents,鈥 Rowe says, 鈥渢heir lifespan is much shorter than humans鈥.鈥 In mouse studies, researchers often consider about one month after injury to represent a chronic time point. 鈥淪o, when we see effects at 30 days in a mouse, it suggests that the biological changes are lasting well beyond the immediate injury period.鈥&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>While animal models cannot directly predict human timelines, these findings indicate that sleep disruption shortly after a brain injury may have long-term consequences for recovery.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>鈥淭he chronic time period is when you start thinking about longer-term consequences of brain injury,鈥 Rowe says. If inflammation persists beyond the initial injury phase, even at lower levels, it can create an environment that interferes with normal brain recovery. 鈥淵ou can start to see sustained inflammatory signaling, stress on neurons and changes that may contribute to neurodegenerative diseases over time.鈥&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>In summary, when combined with sleep fragmentation, TBI can weaken spatial learning and memory, cause persistent inflammation and prevent proper healing. Disposable products, such as tampons and pads, are some of the <a href="https://hsph.harvard.edu/research/apple-womens-health-study/study-updates/menstrual-hygiene-products-pads-and-tampons-are-the-go-to-choice/" rel="nofollow">most popular products</a> used around the globe to manage menstrual flow.</p><p>Unfortunately, studies have shown that many personal care products, including shampoo, lotion, nail polish and menstrual products, <a href="https://www.intechopen.com/chapters/72654" rel="nofollow">contain hazardous chemicals</a>. Items used in or near the vagina are of particular concern because they are in contact with <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/body/22469-vagina" rel="nofollow">vaginal mucous membranes</a><span>鈥</span>the moist tissue lining the inside of the vagina that secretes mucus. These tissues <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.fertnstert.2004.01.025" rel="nofollow">can absorb some chemicals very efficiently</a>.</p><p>People use menstrual products 24 hours a day for multiple days monthly, over the course of many years. Lab</a>.</p> </span> </div></div><p>I am an <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=eHtRF7EAAAAJ&amp;hl=en" rel="nofollow">environmental epidemiologist</a>, and I study chemical exposure, its sources and its health effects. As a person who menstruates, I also must make my own decisions around menstrual products and manage the challenge of finding accurate information about women鈥檚 health risks, which <a href="https://www.weforum.org/stories/2025/05/why-more-must-be-done-to-close-the-women-s-health-research-gap/" rel="nofollow">receive less research attention</a> <a href="https://doi.org/10.1089/jwh.2020.8682" rel="nofollow">and funding</a> than men鈥檚 health.</p><p>In 2024, I co-authored the first paper that detected <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envint.2024.108849" rel="nofollow">metals in tampons</a>, including toxic metals like lead and arsenic. My colleagues and I also wrote a review paper that surveyed the scientific literature and found about two dozen studies <a href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s40572-022-00331-1" rel="nofollow">measuring chemicals in menstrual products</a>.</p><p>The various chemicals that these studies detected were typically at concentrations low enough to make their health impact unclear. However, they included chemicals known to <a href="https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/endocrine-system" rel="nofollow">disrupt the endocrine system</a>, which makes and controls hormones that are essential for bodies to function.</p><p><strong>How contaminants get into menstrual products</strong></p><p>The first modern tampon in the U.S. was <a href="https://barnhardt.net/the-history-of-tampons/" rel="nofollow">patented in 1931</a>. Nearly a century later, tampons still are made primarily from cotton, rayon or a blend of the two.</p><p>Chemicals may get into tampons and other menstrual products in a number of ways. Some chemicals, like heavy metals, are <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.apgeochem.2009.03.013" rel="nofollow">present in soil, either naturally or due to pollution</a>, and may be <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.indcrop.2003.10.001" rel="nofollow">absorbed by cotton plants</a>.</p><p>Other chemicals, such as zinc, may be intentionally added to menstrual products to <a href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s42452-024-05719-2" rel="nofollow">prevent the growth of harmful bacteria</a>. Still others, such as <a href="https://biomonitoring.ca.gov/chemicals/phthalates" rel="nofollow">phthalates</a><span>鈥</span>synthetic chemicals <a href="https://theconversation.com/what-are-phthalates-and-how-do-they-put-childrens-health-at-risk-155841" rel="nofollow">used to manufacture plastics</a><span>鈥</span>may leach into menstrual products from <a href="https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.9b03927" rel="nofollow">plastic packaging</a> or be <a href="https://doi.org/10.3390/ecsoc-27-16118" rel="nofollow">added as part of a fragrance</a>.</p><p>Research suggests that these chemicals are present in a large proportion of menstrual products 鈥 we found lead present in <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envint.2024.108849" rel="nofollow">all 30 tampons we tested</a>. What we don鈥檛 yet know is if these chemicals can get into people鈥檚 bodies in a high enough concentration to cause health effects in either the reproductive system or elsewhere in the body.</p><p><strong>Limited federal regulations</strong></p><p>The U.S. Food and Drug Administration <a href="https://www.fda.gov/media/71254/download" rel="nofollow">regulates tampons, menstrual cups and scented menstrual pads</a> as Class II medical devices, which carry moderate to medium risk. Unscented menstrual pads are Class I medical devices, which are considered low-risk. <a href="https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/overview-device-regulation/classify-your-medical-device" rel="nofollow">These categories</a> are based on the risk the device may present to a consumer who uses it in the intended way.</p><p>FDA <a href="https://www.fda.gov/media/71254/download" rel="nofollow">guidance for Class II devices</a> offers only a few general guidelines with respect to chemicals. For menstrual tampons and pads, it recommends<span>鈥</span>but does not require<span>鈥</span>that products should not contain two specific dioxin products or 鈥渁ny pesticide and herbicide residues.鈥 Dioxins are a chemical by-product of the bleaching process to whiten cotton, and they are associated with <a href="https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1600-0463.2001.tb05771.x" rel="nofollow">cancer and endocrine disruption</a>. Using non-chlorine bleaching methods can <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.chemosphere.2019.124386" rel="nofollow">reduce dioxin formation</a>.</p><p>The most stringent regulation of tampons in the U.S. occurred after an illness called <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/toxic-shock-syndrome/symptoms-causes/syc-20355384" rel="nofollow">toxic shock syndrome</a> became a public concern in the 1970s and 1980s. Menstrual toxic shock syndrome occurs when the bacteria <em>Staphlococcus aureus</em> grows in the vagina on inserted menstrual products and releases a toxin called TSST-1. This substance can be absorbed through the vaginal mucosa and cause a variety of symptoms, including <a href="https://doi.org/10.1093/omcr/omx020" rel="nofollow">fever, high blood pressure, shock and even death</a>.</p><p>During <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/lmrk067.htm" rel="nofollow">this epidemic</a>, in which at least 52 cases were recorded and seven people died over a period of eight months, <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00001651.htm" rel="nofollow">tampons were associated with the syndrome</a><span>鈥</span>especially a highly absorbent tampon called Rely, which was pulled from the market.</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-xlarge"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p>&nbsp;</p> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2026-02/feminine%20hygiene%20products.jpg?itok=zrl6NGay" width="1500" height="1000" alt="assortment of tampons and maxi pads"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text"><span>The U.S. Food and Drug Administration </span><a href="https://www.fda.gov/media/71254/download" rel="nofollow">regulates tampons, menstrual cups and scented menstrual pads</a><span> as Class II medical devices, which carry moderate to medium risk. (Photo: iStock)</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>In response, the FDA <a href="https://doi.org/10.1503/cmaj.161479" rel="nofollow">created a task force</a> that recommended standardizing the tampon absorbencies and advised consumers to use the lowest absorbency for their flow. This is why tampons in the U.S. now come in a range of absorbencies, from light through regular to super and ultra, so that users can choose the level they need while minimizing risk of toxic shock.</p><p><strong>Living in a 鈥榮oup of chemicals鈥</strong></p><p>Just because a chemical is present in a menstrual product doesn鈥檛 mean it can get into the body. However, chemicals like <a href="https://biomonitoring.ca.gov/fact-sheets" rel="nofollow">lead</a> and <a href="https://biomonitoring.ca.gov/fact-sheets" rel="nofollow">arsenic</a> are <a href="https://theconversation.com/arsenic-contamination-of-food-and-water-is-a-global-public-health-concern-researchers-are-studying-how-it-causes-cancer-200689" rel="nofollow">known threats to human health</a>. So it鈥檚 important to study whether harmful chemicals present in menstrual products could contribute to health problems.</p><p>Humans in the modern world live in what <a href="https://www.niehs.nih.gov/research/atniehs/labs/mtb/staff/birnbaum" rel="nofollow">expert toxicologist Linda Birnbaum</a>, former director of the <a href="https://www.niehs.nih.gov/" rel="nofollow">National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences</a>, calls a 鈥<a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/nature.2012.11881" rel="nofollow">soup of chemicals</a>.鈥 Simply being present on Earth means being exposed to many chemicals, at different concentrations, all at once. This makes it difficult to unravel the relationship between a single chemical exposure and health.</p><p>Nonetheless, science has shown that chemical exposure from at least one menstrual product<span>鈥</span>vaginal douches<span>鈥</span>does affect health. <a href="https://womenshealth.gov/a-z-topics/douching#" rel="nofollow">Vaginal douching</a> is the process of washing or cleaning the inside of the vagina with water or other fluids.</p><p>The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists <a href="https://www.acog.org/womens-health/experts-and-stories/ask-acog/is-it-safe-to-douche-during-pregnancy" rel="nofollow">recommends avoiding this process</a>, which can harm healthy bacteria in the vagina, increasing the risk of <a href="https://doi.org/10.3390/microorganisms11020298" rel="nofollow">vaginal infections and other diseases</a>.</p><p>In addition, a 2015 study found that women who use vaginal douches have higher concentrations of <a href="https://doi.org/10.1186/s12940-015-0043-6" rel="nofollow">a chemical called monoethyl phthalate in their urine</a>. Exposure to this substance is associated with <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.reprotox.2025.108948" rel="nofollow">reproductive health problems</a>, such as reduced fertility and increased pregnancy risk.</p><p><strong>Can these chemicals be absorbed?</strong></p><p>Scientists are working now to determine what concentrations of metals and other chemicals can leach out of tampons and other menstrual products. One 2025 study estimated that volatile organic compounds, a group of chemicals that vaporize quickly, can be <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40344599/" rel="nofollow">absorbed through the vaginal mucosa</a>. Volatile organic compounds may be <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envint.2020.105740" rel="nofollow">added to menstrual products</a> as part of fragrances, adhesives or other product components.</p><p>My team and I are now shifting our focus to the relationship between menstrual product use, various chemicals, and menstrual pain and bleeding severity. We want to see whether some chemicals will be elevated in menstrual blood, whether these chemical levels are higher in people who use tampons, and whether the chemicals are associated with greater menstrual pain and bleeding.</p><p>States are starting to act on this issue. For example, in 2024, <a href="https://www.chemistryworld.com/news/first-us-state-bans-pfas-other-chemicals-from-period-products/4019622.article" rel="nofollow">Vermont became the first U.S. state</a> to ban multiple chemicals from disposable menstrual products. California bans PFAS, a widely used group of <a href="https://www.epa.gov/pfas/pfas-explained" rel="nofollow">highly persistent chemicals</a>, <a href="https://www.sgs.com/en-us/news/2024/12/safeguards-17624-california-to-enforce-pfas-prohibitions-in-menstrual-products" rel="nofollow">from menstrual products</a>. New York adopted a law in December 2025 <a href="https://fastdemocracy.com/bill-search/ny/2025-2026/bills/NYB00162180/" rel="nofollow">barring multiple toxic chemicals</a> from menstrual products.</p><p>California also <a href="https://www.gov.ca.gov/2025/10/11/governor-newsom-signs-legislative-package-to-expand-services-and-resources-for-californian-women/" rel="nofollow">enacted a law in October 2025</a> that requires manufacturers of disposable tampons and pads to measure concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, lead and zinc in their products, and to share those measurements with the state, which can publish them. He then turned himself in to the police, saying, 鈥淲hy do we do things . . . I don鈥檛 know . . . I just shot [Moscone], I don鈥檛 know.鈥&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>In the trial that followed,&nbsp;</span><em><span>People v. White</span></em><span>, which ran from May 1-21, 1979, White鈥檚 defense argued not that White was innocent鈥攈e鈥檇 confessed, after all鈥攂ut that, when he committed the murders, he鈥檇 been suffering from 鈥渄iminished capacity鈥 and was therefore incapable of premeditation, a key requirement of first-degree murder charges.</span></p><p><span>One revealing piece of evidence, the defense claimed, was White鈥檚 diet. White was charged with voluntary manslaughter, a lesser charge than first-degree murder, and received a prison sentence of just under eight years, of which he ended up serving only five.</span></p><p><span>A fierce backlash followed the ruling. Many took to the streets to express their outrage, most notably with the&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/white-night-riots-sf-dan-white-milk-moscone-13862312.php" rel="nofollow"><span>White Night Riots</span></a><span>, while others took to the media.</span></p><p><span>鈥淭here is no question that a travesty of justice occurred in the trial of Dan White,鈥&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.scribd.com/document/126032684/How-Dan-White-Got-Away-With-Murder-And-How-American-Psychiatry-Helped-Him-Do-it-by-Thomas-Szasz" rel="nofollow"><span>wrote psychiatrist Thomas Szasz</span></a><span>. 鈥淚n the trial of Dan White, the defense, aided and abetted by the prosecution, had the power to hand the case over to the psychiatrists, and the psychiatrists had the power to redefine a political crime as an ordinary crime, and an ordinary crime as a psychiatric problem.鈥</span></p><p><span>Yet in a&nbsp;</span><a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39483285/" rel="nofollow"><span>paper published in the journal&nbsp;</span><em><span>NeuroSci</span></em><span>,</span></a><span> 抖阴传媒在线 Professor of Integrative Physiology&nbsp;</span><a href="/iphy/people/faculty/christopher-lowry" rel="nofollow"><span>Christopher Lowry</span></a><span>, along with several co-authors, suggests that the White case might have been ahead of its time in assuming a link between ultraprocessed foods and human behavior.</span></p><p><span><strong>Gut reactions</strong></span></p><p><span>It鈥檚 unsurprising that so many people found White鈥檚 claim of diminished capacity less than persuasive, says Lowry. In 1979, the scientific community hadn鈥檛 yet recognized the microbiome, or the commonwealth of bacteria occupying the human gut. The connection between it, one鈥檚 diet and one鈥檚 behavior therefore seemed flimsy.</span></p><p><span>鈥淲e didn't know that there was a microbiome, and that the microbiome impacts behavior,鈥 Lowry explains. 鈥淸White鈥檚 defense team] was just basing their conclusions on observations that these types of foods, these ultraprocessed foods, could affect people鈥檚 behavior in negative ways. So, it was kind of a crude assessment of this association between what you eat and behavioral outcomes.鈥</span></p><p><span>But for the past several decades, scientific research in a field referred to as psychoneuroimmunology, much of it pioneered by&nbsp;</span><a href="/psych-neuro/steven-f-maier" rel="nofollow"><span>Steven F. Maier</span></a><span> and&nbsp;</span><a href="/neuroscience/linda-r-watkins" rel="nofollow"><span>Linda R. Watkins</span></a><span> of CU 抖阴传媒在线鈥檚&nbsp;</span><a href="/lab/maier-watkins/" rel="nofollow"><span>Maier Watkins Laboratory</span></a><span>, has established a clear relationship between microbes (or their components), the brain and behavior.</span></p><p><span>A crucial explanatory ingredient in this relationship, says Lowry, is inflammation, or the body鈥檚 immune response to what it deems threats.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>鈥淭here鈥檚 a through-line between diet impacting the microbiome and the permeability of the gut barrier, which allows bacteria and bacterial products to get into the body, which can drive systemic inflammation. (Photo: iStock)</span></p> </span> </div></div><p><span>The takeaway, Lowry explains, is that some foods鈥攏amely ultraprocessed foods鈥攃an negatively affect the microbiome and thus increase risk factors for violent or rash behavior. 鈥淚t鈥檚 clear that inflammation does impact aggressive behavior, does impact impulsivity.鈥 It鈥檚 so clear, in fact, that the negative health outcomes of ultraprocessed foods are now at the forefront of&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(25)01567-3/fulltext" rel="nofollow"><span>public health policy</span></a><span>, and San Francisco is&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2025/12/02/ultra-processed-foods-lawsuit/" rel="nofollow"><span>suing</span></a><span> makers of ultraprocessed foods for creating products that have saddled governments with public health costs.</span></p><p><span>Yet the news isn鈥檛 all bad, Lowry says. Just as ultraprocessed foods can lead to negative mental health outcomes, less-processed foods can lead to positive mental health outcomes.</span></p><p><span>鈥淲hat other researchers have found is that, regardless of whether you look at people without a diagnosis of depression or anxiety, or you look at clinical populations鈥攑eople that have a diagnosis of anxiety disorder or mood disorder鈥攊n either case, you can simply change the diet of these individuals [by reducing their intake of ultraprocessed foods] and improve their anxiety and depression symptoms.鈥</span></p><p><span><strong>Food or foodlike substances?</strong></span></p><p><span>Moving away from ultraprocessed foods would mean big changes for many Americans, says Lowry, who points out that more than 50% of the foods purchased in U.S. grocery stores are ultraprocessed.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>But what counts as ultraprocessed anyway? Don鈥檛 most foods go through some degree of processing before ending up on eaters鈥 plates?</span></p><p><span>One useful resource, says Lowry, is the four-level&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.eatrightpro.org/news-center/practice-trends/examining-the-nova-food-classification-system-and-healthfulness-of-ultra-processed-foods" rel="nofollow"><span>NOVA system</span></a><span> developed by Carlos Augusto Monteiro and a team of researchers at the University of S茫o Paulo in Brazil in 2009.</span></p><p><span>鈥淟evel 1 is unprocessed. This would be if you pulled the carrot out of the ground and ate it,鈥 says Lowry. 鈥淟evel 2 involves more processing,鈥 but it鈥檚 processing 鈥渢hat we can do in our kitchen. So, you might take a carrot and combine it with some celery and spices and make a stir-fry that you put on rice.鈥</span></p><p><span>Level 3 involves processing that people generally can鈥檛 perform in their kitchens. 鈥淔or example, there鈥檚 very few of us that can take salmon and make canned salmon. It鈥檚 food鈥攊t鈥檚 salmon鈥攂ut it鈥檚 been processed in a way with very high heat and pressure to make it sterile so that it has a prolonged shelf life.鈥</span></p><p><span>Level 4, on the other hand, is another thing entirely, different from the other three levels not just in degree but in kind.</span></p><p><span>鈥淟evel 4 is not food,鈥 says Lowry. 鈥淟evel 4 is chemicals that have been put together in a way that makes them highly palatable.鈥&nbsp;</span><a href="https://michaelpollan.com/books/in-defense-of-food/" rel="nofollow"><span>In the words of Michael Pollan</span></a><span>, Level 4 processing produces not food but 鈥渆dible foodlike substances.鈥</span></p><p><span>To avoid inflammation鈥攁nd its attendant behavioral risk factors鈥擫owry suggests eaters opt for the first three levels and do their best to steer clear of the fourth.</span></p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-xlarge"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p>&nbsp;</p> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2025-12/fruits%20and%20vegetables.jpg?itok=LZYdz7Ni" width="1500" height="1000" alt="fruits and vegetables stacked at market"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text"><span>Just as ultraprocessed foods can lead to negative mental health outcomes, less-processed foods can lead to positive mental health outcomes, says CU 抖阴传媒在线 scholar Christopher Lowry. (Photo: Jacopo Maiarelli/Unsplash)</span></p> </span> </div></div><p><span>鈥淕iven the growing evidence that ultraprocessed foods lead to multiple negative health outcomes, I think the goal is to shift away, to the extent possible, from ultraprocessed foods toward less processed food,鈥 he says. 鈥淭he diets that have benefit are rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, healthy fats like olive oil and occasionally fish.鈥</span></p><p><span><strong>Free will on trial</strong></span></p><p><span>In their paper, Lowry and his co-authors raise questions about the role of free will in criminal law. Specifically, how much responsibility does a person bear for a crime they committed while under the influence of diminished capacity?</span></p><p><span>A few non-food-related examples bring this question into stark relief.</span></p><p><span>Shane Tamura, who in July shot four people in a Manhattan office building before killing himself, was revealed in an autopsy to have had low-level chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a disease often associated with contact sports like football and boxing. 鈥淸S]tudy my brain please,鈥 he said in his alleged suicide note. 鈥淚鈥檓 sorry.鈥</span></p><p><span>And Charles Whitman, the 鈥淭exas Tower Sniper鈥 who in 1966 killed his wife, his mother and 11 people on the University of Texas at Austin campus, likewise requested that he undergo an autopsy following his crimes.</span></p><p><span>鈥淸L]ately (I can鈥檛 recall when it started) I have been a victim of many unusual and irrational thoughts,鈥 the Eagle Scout, scoutmaster and Marine veteran wrote in his confession the night before his crimes. 鈥淎fter my death I wish that an autopsy would be performed on me to see if there is any visible physical disorder. I have had some tremendous headaches in the past and have consumed two large bottles of Excedrin in the past three months.鈥</span></p><p><span>During the autopsy, medical examiners discovered a nickel-sized tumor pressing up against Whitman鈥檚 amygdala. Since the 1800s, researchers have known that damage to the amygdala can cause emotional and social disturbances.</span></p><p><span>Whether Tamura鈥檚 and Whitman鈥檚 brain pathologies directly caused their crimes is unknown and impossible to prove, but if their writings are any indication, they didn鈥檛 seem fully committed to perpetrating those crimes. And yet perpetrate them they did. What if something similar happened with Dan White? What if what people eat alters their sense of what they choose to do鈥攖heir free will?&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Of course, some philosophers and scientists don鈥檛 believe free will exists at all, perhaps the most popular among them being the neuroscientist Robert Sapolsky, author of&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/592344/determined-by-robert-m-sapolsky/" rel="nofollow"><em><span>Determined: A Science of Life without Free Will</span></em><span>.</span></a><span>&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>鈥淲hen most people think they鈥檙e discerning free will, what they mean is somebody intended to do what they did: Something has just happened; somebody pulled the trigger. They understood the consequences and knew that alternative behaviors were available,鈥 Sapolsky says in a&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/16/science/free-will-sapolsky.html" rel="nofollow"><em><span>New York Times</span></em><span> interview</span></a><span>.</span></p><p><span>鈥淏ut that doesn鈥檛 remotely begin to touch it, because you鈥檝e got to ask: Where did that intent come from? That鈥檚 what happened a minute before, in the years before, and everything in between.鈥</span></p><p><span>For his part, Lowry expresses less certainty than Sapolsky, but he nevertheless believes the issue of free will as it relates to ultraprocessed foods, the brain and human behavior is an important one to consider.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>鈥淚f you鈥檙e born in an inner city with low socioeconomic status, you have very limited access to fresh foods鈥攙egetables, nuts, seeds, healthy foods鈥攁nd instead you鈥檙e raised on ultraprocessed foods, which are very cheap, do you ultimately have free will? Do you have the mental foundation to make decisions based on free will? For Todd Carver (IntPhys鈥00, MIntPhys鈥02), 鈥渕y lower back is the problem. I struggled with my position but finally got to the point where I could ride pain-free as I understood the human body more and was actually able to make changes to my position on the bike.</p><p>鈥淧lus, the bike鈥檚 adjustable, right, so you can move the seat, you can adjust your touchpoints to the bike, your hands, butt and feet can all be adjusted. How do you position a rider to be powerful, efficient and perform well? All the things I was learning in my academic career under Bill Byrnes and Rodger Kram鈥攖he focus of my research鈥攚as in predicting cycling performance, who鈥檚 going to perform well and who鈥檚 not.鈥</p><p>The problem was, there just weren鈥檛 that many tools to assess a rider鈥檚 position on their bike and give them a three-dimensional, dynamic bike fit. So, Carver and two colleagues developed one: Ret眉l, a bike fitting and product matching technology now used by professional cycling teams, performance centers, rehabilitation centers and bicycle retailers worldwide.</p><p>Ret眉l wrought such a change in the cycling world that Specialized acquired it in 2012. Now, as head of human performance for Specialized, Carver continues to innovate at the vanguard of cycling fit and performance.</p><p>鈥淩iders just want to be pain free,鈥 Carver says. 鈥淎nd even if they don鈥檛 care about being fast, they don鈥檛 want to push on the pedal and not go or push on the pedal and it hurts.鈥</p><p><strong>Bike = freedom</strong></p><p>Carver discovered young that pushing on a bike pedal is bliss and freedom in equal measure. 鈥淢y first bike was a Huffy, and it was frickin鈥 rad,鈥 he recalls. 鈥淎s a kid, I realized that on a bike I can go way farther. Plus, he brought to the performance lab and insiders knowledge of the problems cyclists could have.</p><p>鈥淥ne of the studies that we did with Rodger (Kram) was measuring aerodynamic drag on bikes, and I saw how big of an opportunity fit was,鈥 Carver says. 鈥淵ou can have a really fast bike, and that鈥檚 good, but the human body makes up 80 to 90% of drag.</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-xlarge"><div class="ucb-callout-content"> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2025-09/Todd%20Carver%20bike%20fitting.jpg?itok=NVZl6kBV" width="1500" height="1000" alt="Todd Carver performing bike fitting with cyclist on bike"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text">Todd Carver (left) works with a cyclist to gather data for a bike fitting. We take them to the velodrome, measure aerodynamics and then work with fit to try to improve it. I鈥檇 almost say that one of the biggest impacts we鈥檝e had is helping send professional and career cycling more toward science.鈥</p><p>After earning his master鈥檚 degree, Carver worked at the 抖阴传媒在线 Center for Sports Medicine, where he and an engineer colleague, Cliff Simms, soon realized that people were flying in from as far as Europe to get fitted for bikes. He wondered why they couldn鈥檛 get fitted in their hometowns, 鈥渁nd it really came down to the technology. For a bike shop to get the digital technology was too expensive and it was too hard to run鈥攜ou basically would need a master鈥檚 degree in biomechanics to do it鈥攕o this engineer friend and I started to look at how we could break down those barriers.鈥</p><p>They began developing a motion-capture system that measures length and trigonometric relation between small LED markers placed all over the cyclist鈥檚 body and synchronized to flash at certain times, a process that happens in milliseconds. 3D cameras positioned around the rider record the data, which is immediately analyzed and used to fit riders to bikes with millimeter precision.</p><p><strong>Affordable, portable, easy to use</strong></p><p>With partner Franko Vatterott, Carver and Simms founded Ret眉l in 2007 with a goal of making bike fitting more affordable, portable, easy to use and data driven.</p><p>鈥淚 say I got my MBA starting a company,鈥 Carver says. 鈥淚 knew nothing, and I learned it starting a company. One big thing we learned is you better have a darn good product, and what we felt we had was a really good product, so that made some things easier. We didn鈥檛 need to take investment initially; we were able to just bootstrap it and work off the money we were making (during development).鈥</p><p>They also were building a database containing everything they were learning about different types of bodies and how they fit on bikes鈥攄ata they knew would be appealing to bike manufacturers. (Photo: Todd Carver)</p> </span> </div></div><p>They initially worked with professional riders, drawing on connections Carver had made with riders in CU 抖阴传媒在线 performance labs, and marketed Ret眉l to fitting pro teams. 鈥淭hen bike shops were coming to us saying, 鈥榃e鈥檇 like to buy one of your systems.鈥</p><p>鈥淔rom the rider point of view, what I was hearing was, 鈥榃ow, that feels way better, and it鈥檚 easier for me to pedal鈥 or 鈥楾hat completely got rid of my injury and now I can push harder.鈥 The problem might not be the bike itself, it just might be the saddle or the shoe or the footbed, or it just might be that the rider needs to reposition themself on the bike. From the rider point of view, that鈥檚 powerful because they could see that bike shops weren鈥檛 always trying to sell them a new bike, but had the data to say, 鈥楲et鈥檚 try a new saddle.鈥欌</p><p><strong>鈥楳ore fun with data鈥</strong></p><p>As head of human performance for Specialized, Carver continues to work with riders at all levels and in all areas of cycling.</p><p>鈥淲e work in optimizing athlete and product performance using science,鈥 Carver says. 鈥淚n addition to fitting pros and selling fit systems to retailers, we do a lot of research and development鈥攚e take that fit knowledge we have and are able to then use that for ergonomic design of saddles, shoes and hand grips.</p><p>鈥淗ow hand grips are shaped, for example, affects how a rider鈥檚 hand sits, which can mean the difference between a comfortable hand and one that goes numb. So, what we do is prototype and test and gather data for better design. We do so much work in saddles, which is the hardest thing on a bike to get right, so we鈥檙e always testing with pressure mapping.鈥</p><p>The overarching goal, Carver says, is to solve riders鈥 problems, 鈥渁nd that鈥檚 more fun with data.鈥</p><p>Carver often considers whether his life鈥檚 work is science or art, and figures it lives somewhere between the two: 鈥淲e use scientific tools, have all these ranges, but we can鈥檛 know everything from that. I think that鈥檚 where the art comes in. You need to work with a lot of different riders鈥攕ome who just want to ride bikes down to the grocery store and don鈥檛 want to be aerodynamic or fast鈥攁nd you have to be able to empathize with that as well as the more competitive side of cycling. That difference, new research from </span><a href="/iphy/people/faculty/christopher-lowry" rel="nofollow"><span>抖阴传媒在线 Professor Christopher Lowry</span></a><span> suggests, could influence how your body responds to stress even decades later.</span></p><p><span>In </span><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0889159125000996" rel="nofollow"><span>a study published</span></a><span> in the journal </span><em><span>Brain, Behavior, and Immunity</span></em><span>, an international team of researchers, including Lowry and CU 抖阴传媒在线 PhD student </span><a href="/iphy/john-sterrett" rel="nofollow"><span>John Sterrett</span></a><span>, found that for people raised in urban environments, having regular contact with pets early in life may protect against harmful immune responses to stress.</span></p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-medium"><div class="ucb-callout-content"> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2025-08/Christopher%20Lowry.jpg?itok=6NvlRDCA" width="1500" height="1500" alt="portrait of Christopher Lowry wearing white lab coat"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text">CU 抖阴传媒在线 scientist Christopher Lowry and his research colleagues found that <span>having regular contact with pets early in life may protect against harmful immune responses to stress.</span></p> </span> </div></div><p><span>鈥淏eing raised in a home with pets can provide protection against chronic low-grade inflammation, which we know is a risk factor for stress-related psychiatric disorders and more,鈥 Lowry says.</span></p><p><span>The study adds to a growing body of evidence that our childhood environments can leave a lasting mark on our physical and mental health.</span></p><p><span><strong>Our oldest friends</strong></span></p><p><span>Lowry is a professor in the </span><a href="/iphy/people/faculty/christopher-lowry" rel="nofollow"><span>Department of Integrative Physiology at CU 抖阴传媒在线</span></a><span> and has spent much of his career studying how the microbial world interacts with the human brain. It鈥檚 a fascination that traces back to the 1990s when he started exploring how soil microbes influence mood.</span></p><p><span>鈥淔or about 25 years, we have been interested in understanding how microbes found in our environment鈥攊n nature, soil, fermenting vegetable matter, and unpurified water鈥攃an signal from the body to the brain,鈥 Lowry says.</span></p><p><span>Along with a research team directed by Stafford Lightman at the University of Bristol鈥檚 University Research Center for Neuroendocrinology, Lowry studied </span><em><span>Mycobacterium vaccae</span></em><span> NCTC 11659 (</span><em><span>M. vaccae</span></em><span>), a microbe commonly found in soil.</span></p><p><span>His lab found that exposure to </span><em><span>M. vaccae</span></em><span> in mice activated serotonin pathways in the brain and produced antidepressant-like behavioral effects.</span></p><p><span>鈥</span><em><span>M. vaccae</span></em><span> is representative of diverse microbes in nature that have the ability to promote immunoregulation and protect us from inappropriate inflammation,鈥 Lowry explains.</span></p><p><span>The microbe soon became a model for studying what scientists now call 鈥淥ld Friends鈥濃攖he microorganisms humans co-evolved with and depend on for proper immune system development.</span></p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-xlarge"><div class="ucb-callout-content"> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2025-08/guinea%20pigs%20eating%20carrots.jpg?itok=CWCocAGg" width="1500" height="1000" alt="two spotted guinea pigs eating shredded carrots"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text"><span>鈥淏eing raised in a home with pets can provide protection against chronic low-grade inflammation, which we know is a risk factor for stress-related psychiatric disorders and more,鈥 says CU 抖阴传媒在线 researcher Christopher Lowry. (Photo: Bonnie Kittle/Unsplash)</span></p> </span> </div></div><p><span>It鈥檚 thought that modern urban living, with its clean indoor environments and reduced contact with naturally occurring microbes, disrupts this relationship. In turn, people living in such environments have experienced a rise in chronic, stress-related disorders.</span></p><p><span><strong>Pets as microbial messengers</strong></span></p><p><span>In a previous study, Lowry and his colleagues </span><a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29712842/" rel="nofollow"><span>showed</span></a><span> that people raised on farms, with regular exposure to animals, exhibited lower inflammatory responses to psychological stress. But in that study, it was hard to separate the effects of rural living from contact with animals.</span></p><p><span>So, the team designed a new study to answer a more specific question.</span></p><p><span>鈥淲e designed the study to determine if having pets in the home could protect against inappropriate inflammation in individuals raised in urban settings,鈥 Lowry says.</span></p><p><span>The team recruited healthy adult men who had been raised in cities either with or without household pets. The participants were then exposed to the Trier Social Stress Test, and measurements of their immune function and inflammation were taken both before and after completing stressful tasks like public speaking.</span></p><p><span>Compared to their pet-free peers, individuals who grew up with pets showed a more balanced immune response and better regulation of stress-reactive cells.</span></p><p><span>But what accounts for this striking result?</span></p><p><span>鈥淓xposures to 鈥極ld Friends,鈥 which are thought to increase in homes with pets, interacts with our immune system to produce more regulatory T cells,鈥 Lowry explains. 鈥淲ithout sufficient exposure to 鈥極ld Friends鈥 we have reduced capacity to produce these regulatory T cells, which leads to inappropriate or unresolved inflammation.鈥</span></p><p><span>In short, a four-legged friend in the house means more microbial diversity. He is now involved in several projects exploring how they could be applied in the real world.</span></p><p><span>鈥淲e are interested in exploring if we can increase mental health outcomes by increasing exposure to 鈥極ld Friends,鈥欌 he says, pointing to clinical trials testing microbial supplements and high-diversity plant-based beverages, which contain diverse microbial communities.</span></p><p><span>He鈥檚 also a co-founder of a </span><a href="/venturepartners/startup-portfolio/kioga-inc" rel="nofollow"><span>CU 抖阴传媒在线 startup company Kioga</span></a><span>, which is developing soil-derived microbiome-based nutritional supplements, food ingredients and therapeutics. Their goal is to improve mental health outcomes for anyone experiencing high levels of perceived stress, whether or not they have a diagnosed disorder.</span></p><p><span><strong>What comes next?</strong></span></p><p><span>Lowry also notes that more research is needed to explore if the recent findings hold true for women or people of different ages or backgrounds.</span></p><p><span>鈥淭his is an extremely important question,鈥 Lowry says. 鈥淢ore work is needed to fully understand the importance of upbringing in rural versus urban lifestyles in females.鈥</span></p><p><span>Still, the implications are clear. Something as simple as living with a pet could help buffer the long-term health risks of urban living. Everything from a person鈥檚 income and education levels to the purity of the air they breathe and their access to grocery stores can play a role in their well-being.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">Against this backdrop, scientists wanted to understand whether there was a relationship between the complexity of infants鈥 medical conditions, their neighborhood opportunity and their developmental progress.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">鈥淭o fully understand the developmental challenges these infants face, it is essential to consider how their medical conditions interact with the social and environmental contexts of their upbringing,鈥 says Yeo.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">The team studied 440 infants born in Southern California between 2014 and 2023. Doctors had deemed these babies 鈥渉igh-risk鈥 because they were born prematurely, had very low birth weights or suffered from conditions that required treatment in a neonatal intensive care unit.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">By reviewing the infants鈥 medical records, scientists were able to categorize them based on the seriousness of their situation. Infants with the highest level of medical complexity, for instance, had conditions like permanent brain damage or chronic respiratory issues. Those with the lowest level of medical complexity, meanwhile, had more easily treatable conditions, like acute lung or eye infections.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">Researchers also assessed each child鈥檚 neighborhood opportunity level, based on their home address. For this, they turned to the </span><a href="https://www.diversitydatakids.org/child-opportunity-index" rel="nofollow"><span lang="EN">Child Opportunity Index</span></a><span lang="EN">, a pre-existing, composite index that analyzes education, health, social and economic data from every census tract in the United States.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">Some neighborhoods earn high scores, because the children who live there have access to quality schools, clean air, health care, playgrounds and other conditions that will help them grow up healthy and become thriving adults. Other neighborhoods, however, offer very few or none of these resources. Black, Hispanic and Native American children are more likely to live in very low-opportunity neighborhoods compared to their White peers.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">For each child, researchers also collected developmental scores from standard tests conducted when they were between the ages of 4 months and 36 months old. Developmental scores got worse as medical complexity increased, meaning that infants with more severe and complicated health conditions had lower cognitive, motor and language scores.&nbsp;</span><span>These finding are consistent with previous studies, says Yeo, which have found that infants with fewer medical complications are also likely to face fewer challenges achieving growth milestones.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">The study also found that medical complexity had a more significant effect on developmental outcomes than gestational age, or how early a baby was born. This is an important takeaway for pediatricians, who have long used gestational age to predict potential developmental delays or issues, says Yeo.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">鈥淕estational age might be useful for infants who are not medically complex, but if you鈥檙e looking specifically at those infants, we need a more granular tool,鈥 she says. 鈥淲ith this group of infants, we saw that gestational age didn鈥檛 really play a huge role in deciphering differences in development, whereas their degree of medical complexity did.鈥</span></p><p><span lang="EN">The researchers also found a correlation between lower neighborhood opportunity scores and decreased language scores, but not cognitive and motor scores. The reasons for this discrepancy are not clear. But, overall, this finding indicates that where an infant lives does seem to play a role in their development.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">Importantly, the study also ruled out differences in development based on race and ethnicity alone. Black and Hispanic babies did have lower developmental scores than White babies, but the findings indicate those disparities resulted from differences in the infants鈥&nbsp;</span><span>socio-demographic and medical factors.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">鈥淭he differences do not come from race and ethnicity itself鈥攖hey come from other influential factors that tend to be worse in those groups,鈥 says Yeo, adding that this finding aligns with the general shift from race-based to race-conscious medicine.</span></p><p><span lang="EN"><strong>More social supports for development</strong></span></p><p><span lang="EN">Together, the study results align with what pediatricians see in real life鈥攖hat childhood development is affected by both medical and social factors. The research also highlights the importance of early intervention programs and policies designed to help children succeed.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">鈥淚t鈥檚 one more indication of how, if we really want to move the needle and improve the outcomes of these babies that are born with medical risk factors, we need to put as many social supports in place as we can to support their development,鈥 says study senior author </span><a href="https://www.chla.org/profile/christine-mirzaian-md-mph-ibclc" rel="nofollow"><span lang="EN">Christine Mirzaian</span></a><span lang="EN">, a pediatrician at Children鈥檚 Hospital Los Angeles and an associate professor of clinical pediatrics in the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California.</span></p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-large"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><blockquote><p class="lead"><em><span>鈥淚t鈥檚 not just the child鈥檚 medical diagnosis that is going to impact their development鈥攊t鈥檚 also the neighborhood the child is brought up in, how much medical care their family is able to afford and other barriers.鈥</span></em></p></blockquote></div></div><p><span lang="EN">The study did not explore the possible mechanisms at play鈥攖hat is, why medical complexity and neighborhood opportunity seem to be linked with development. But the researchers have a few theories.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">For one, children with very serious health issues often need to use medical equipment that helps them breathe and eat鈥攍ike feeding tubes in their stomachs or oxygen tubes in their noses. From a purely physical standpoint, these devices may make it difficult for infants to do 鈥渁ll the basic things babies do,鈥 Mirzaian says, like rolling around or pulling themselves up to a standing position.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">Another possible explanation is that a child鈥檚 appointments and treatments may leave little time for activities that promote development, like reading and playing with toys, Mirzaian adds.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">Families living in neighborhoods with low opportunity scores, meanwhile, may be grappling with poverty鈥攁nd having a baby with a serious medical condition likely only adds to their stress. Through no fault of their own, caregivers may need to focus more on basic needs鈥攍ike how they鈥檙e going to pay next month鈥檚 rent or put food on the table鈥攁nd less on their child鈥檚 development, says Mirzaian.</span></p><p><span lang="EN"><strong>鈥楳edical Data Alone Does Not Tell the Whole Story鈥</strong></span></p><p><span lang="EN">Looking ahead, the co-authors hope other researchers will repeat and replicate the study, perhaps in other geographic locations or with slightly different populations. Future work might also involve following the same children as they grow up, to see whether and how their developmental outcomes change over time.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">For now, though, the study is a good first step toward understanding the link between medical complexity, neighborhood opportunity and development. Zooming out, the findings also reinforce the idea that 鈥渕edical data alone does not tell the whole story,鈥 says Yeo.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">鈥淚t鈥檚 important for researchers to consider social explanations to formulate a holistic picture of infant development,鈥 she adds. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not just the child鈥檚 medical diagnosis that is going to impact their development鈥攊t鈥檚 also the neighborhood the child is brought up in, how much medical care their family is able to afford and other barriers.鈥</span></p><p><em><span lang="EN">In addition to Emily Yeo, Nathan Young, Joseph Cleveland, Tamara Simon, Douglas Vanderbilt, Juan Espinoza, Christine Mirzaian and Tanya Alderete contributed to this research. Kram, with a twinkle in his eye, disagreed.</p><p>鈥淚 provocatively said that I didn鈥檛 think they made any difference,鈥 Kram recalls. 鈥淚 figured even very flexible running shoes would be just as efficient as carbon fiber cycling shoes when riding at a steady pace and moderate intensity.鈥</p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-medium"><div class="ucb-callout-content"> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2025-08/Rodger%20Kram.jpg?itok=Y0n5YYNj" width="1500" height="2100" alt="portrait of Rodger Kram"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text"><a href="/iphy/people/emeritus/rodger-kram" rel="nofollow"><span>Rodger Kram</span></a><span> is a biomechanics researcher and CU 抖阴传媒在线 associate professor emeritus of integrative physiology.</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>Straw was determined to prove his professor wrong. So, the two set out on a small but illuminating study and found that ultra-stiff shoes didn鈥檛 offer improved efficiency during moderate cycling.</p><p>But that was just the beginning.</p><p>Kram and his students have since spent nearly a decade exploring a deceptively simple question: How stiff does a cycling shoe really need to be?</p><p>The answer, it turns out, may surprise even the most gear-obsessed riders.</p><p><strong>The stiffness myth</strong></p><p>Carbon fiber shoes have been marketed as the gold standard for years, and riders have adopted the message. These shoes are sleek and featherlight, and their unyielding soles allegedly transfer more power from leg to pedal.</p><p>Kram鈥檚 research team, including then-graduate student <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/tripp-hurt/" rel="nofollow">Tripp Hurt</a>, conducted a study to test the limits of this belief. They equipped trained cyclists with a set of three identical shoes, each fitted with a unique sole material of varying stiffness. The cyclists were then asked to sprint as hard as possible up a 50-meter stretch of road in each pair.</p><p>After multiple experiments, the <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/19424280.2024.2415082" rel="nofollow">researchers had their answer</a>.</p><p>鈥淭here was a breakpoint,鈥 Kram says. 鈥淏elow a certain stiffness, sprint performance does trail off.鈥</p><p>But not by much. Going from nylon soles (a very stiff reference) to a medium-stiff TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) sole caused only a 3.1% drop in maximal one-second power output. The more flexible, soft TPU sole yielded a further power-output decrease of just 2.4%. At those levels, most cyclists wouldn鈥檛 notice the difference.</p><p>鈥淭he $150 shoes were just as good as the $450 shoes,鈥 Kram says.</p><p><strong>Comfort over carbon</strong></p><p>鈥淔or most of us, like <a href="/event/buffalobicycleclassic/" rel="nofollow">riders in the Buffalo Bicycle Classic</a>, there are far more important qualities in a shoe beyond sprint performance. Are they comfortable would be number one. (Photo: Wikimedia Commons)</span></p> </span> </div></div><p>It鈥檚 a refreshing perspective in a world where the latest (and often most expensive) iterations are always advertised the loudest. Stiff soles may seem impressive in an ad, but they aren鈥檛 always practical, Kram says. They can even be a hazard.</p><p>鈥淪ocial riders often stop for a snack or coffee, and it鈥檚 easy to fall when trying to walk in carbon fiber soles on the tile floor of a caf茅,鈥 Kram says.</p><p>There鈥檚 also a growing awareness of carbon fiber鈥檚 environmental toll. Making carbon fiber is energy intensive and expensive, and the end product is nearly impossible to recycle. Though the sole of a cycling shoe isn鈥檛 world-ending, the cumulative effect of our consumption habits adds up.</p><p>If riders are sacrificing comfort, affordability and sustainability for just a few watts of power they may never use, Kram wonders, what鈥檚 the point?</p><p><strong>Lab to innovation</strong></p><p>That question stuck with Tripp Hurt, the aforementioned CU 抖阴传媒在线 graduate. Inspired by the science, he found <a href="https://ridebrevay.com/" rel="nofollow">Brevay</a>, a shoe startup based in Seattle.</p><p>鈥淚 had my 鈥榣ightbulb鈥 moment after a night out with friends,鈥 Hurt says. 鈥淚 started to think about my biomechanics research and how it was relevant to the overall cycling market. We see these results, but nothing has changed about the way cycling companies were building their product.鈥</p><p>So, Hurt decided to build a new kind of shoe. Brevay鈥檚 first model, the Road One, will be a high-performance road cycling shoe made from sustainable materials.</p><p>鈥淪ustainability and performance are the north star for Brevay. We鈥檙e the first brand developing a sustainable cycling shoe, so the market is unproven if this is a category that cyclists are interested in. But we鈥檙e building it anyway,鈥 Hurt says.</p><div class="ucb-box ucb-box-title-hidden ucb-box-alignment-left ucb-box-style-fill ucb-box-theme-lightgray"><div class="ucb-box-inner"><div class="ucb-box-title">&nbsp;</div><div class="ucb-box-content"><p><em>This year, Rodger Kram will work at the Buffalo Bicycle Classic aid station near his home in Ward, handing out water and snacks to the riders. Though he鈥檚 retired from teaching, he nevertheless considers it important to help make CU Bulder affordable for the next generation of curious students.</em></p></div></div></div><p>That means sourcing bio-based materials, investing in an alternative supply chain and pricing the shoes competitively with the high-end carbon-fiber models they aim to replace.</p><p><strong>Challenging assumptions</strong></p><p>For Kram, the research is about more than shoes.</p><p>鈥淲e love challenging conventional wisdom,鈥 he says, 鈥渁nd cycling is a sport fraught with tradition.鈥</p><p>That spirit of inquiry is part of what makes CU 抖阴传媒在线鈥檚 research culture special, he adds. But she knew education was important to her dad, so she pushed through the pain and enrolled at CU 抖阴传媒在线.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">Now a senior studying integrative physiology and psychology, Ruffolo is preparing for a career in medicine so that, someday, she can help support families just like hers. She hopes to work in pediatric oncology, providing compassionate care to children who are fighting cancer.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">As a Buff, Ruffolo is also honoring her father鈥檚 legacy by raising money and awareness for cancer prevention research, an initiative she started just after her father got his diagnosis.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">鈥淚 just want people to know they have a support system and a network that hates cancer as much as they do鈥攖hat they鈥檙e not alone,鈥 she says.</span></p><p><span lang="EN"><strong>Helping others</strong></span></p><p><span lang="EN">Life was rolling along for the Ruffolo family when they got the news that would change their lives forever. In 2017, their beloved patriarch, </span><a href="https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/legacyremembers/john-ruffolo-obituary?id=7635215" rel="nofollow"><span lang="EN">John Ruffolo</span></a><span lang="EN">, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a disease that is often fatal.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">鈥淚t hit us like a bus,鈥 says Ruffolo.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">Pancreatic cancer is the third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, according to the National Institutes of Health. Between 2015 and 2021, the five-year survival rate was just </span><a href="https://seer.cancer.gov/statfacts/html/pancreas.html" rel="nofollow"><span lang="EN">13.3 percent</span></a><span lang="EN">鈥攎uch lower than other types of cancer. In 2025, the American Cancer Society </span><a href="https://www.cancer.org/cancer/types/pancreatic-cancer/about/key-statistics.html" rel="nofollow"><span lang="EN">estimates</span></a><span lang="EN"> 67,440 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and 51,980 people will die from the disease.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">鈥淚t鈥檚 the cancer that really gives cancer its bad name,鈥 Ruffolo says.</span></p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-xlarge"><div class="ucb-callout-content"> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2025-07/Giovanna%20Ruffolo%20purple%20event.jpg?itok=FFIW31lE" width="1500" height="668" alt="High school students in group photo wearing purple shirts"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text"><span lang="EN">Prospect Ridge Academy High School Students participate in a cancer fundraiser organized by Giovanna Ruffolo in 2019. As a sophomore at Prospect Ridge Academy High School</span><em><span lang="EN">,&nbsp;</span></em><span lang="EN">she created TeamRuffolo, a student-led initiative to raise money and awareness for cancer research.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">In November 2018, her school hosted a 鈥淧urple Out鈥濃攁 one-day event in which students were encouraged to wear purple to show their support for the cancer community and donate whatever they could toward prevention research. Students, teachers and administrators raised more than $1,000 for the American Cancer Society that day, and Ruffolo went home feeling inspired and hopeful.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">She organized similar fundraisers at her high school in 2019 and 2020 (though the initiative had to go virtual because of the COVID-19 pandemic).</span></p><p><span lang="EN">鈥淚t was such a wonderful feeling,鈥 she says. 鈥淎 lot of these people didn鈥檛 even know my dad, but&nbsp; they were still so supportive. Seeing people come together not only for him, but just to say, 鈥榊ou鈥檙e not alone,鈥 was tremendous for all of us.鈥</span></p><p><span lang="EN"><strong>Balancing act</strong></span></p><p><span lang="EN">Meanwhile, despite undergoing various treatments and surgeries, her father鈥檚 cancer continued to progress. Four years after his diagnosis, he succumbed to the disease in January 2021 at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">Ruffolo was utterly devastated, but she knew she had to finish high school and get a college degree for her dad. (Photo: Giovanna Ruffolo)</p> </span> </div></div><p><span lang="EN">At CU 抖阴传媒在线, Ruffolo has thrown herself into her studies, with an ultimate goal of working in the medical field. From her father鈥檚 experience, Ruffolo learned first-hand that cancer affects more than just the body鈥攊t also influences a patient鈥檚 mind, spirit and emotions. With that in mind, she鈥檚 majoring in integrative physiology and psychology to create her own pre-health pathway.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">鈥淢y father had trouble grasping being diagnosed with a terminal disease, as anyone rightfully would,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 want to understand people鈥檚 behaviors and thoughts better, so that when someone is going through a hardship, I can better support them.鈥</span></p><p><span lang="EN">To further build her skill set, Ruffolo also completed CU鈥檚 emergency medical technician (EMT) program, an online, non-credit specialization that prepares students for national registry testing. She has also worked as a research assistant at CU 抖阴传媒在线 and Children's Hospital Colorado.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">In addition, Ruffolo has taken on a leadership role with the CU 抖阴传媒在线 chapter of the American Medical Student Association, spending three years on the executive board before being elected president for the 2025-26 school year. Through the student group, Ruffolo has carried on her TeamRuffolo efforts鈥攏ow called Stronger Together鈥攂y organizing 5-kilometer run/walk events to raise money for the American Cancer Society.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">She is also a journey leader with New Student &amp; Family Programs, where she helps incoming freshmen navigate the CU 抖阴传媒在线 experience. Balancing her studies with her extracurricular activities鈥攚hile also supporting her family and honoring her father鈥檚 legacy鈥攈as been challenging. But, for Ruffolo, it all comes back to staying true to herself.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">鈥淧retty much my tippy-top value is helping others,鈥 she says.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">In class, Ruffolo has never been afraid to ask questions and speak up鈥攅ven when that means talking about her father鈥檚 death in a large lecture hall full of hundreds of students. </span><a href="/psych-neuro/jennifer-stratford" rel="nofollow"><span lang="EN">Jennifer Stratford</span></a><span lang="EN">, a CU 抖阴传媒在线 teaching associate professor of psychology and neuroscience, says Ruffolo鈥檚 willingness to be vulnerable has opened the door for other students to share their experiences.</span></p><div class="feature-layout-callout feature-layout-callout-xlarge"><div class="ucb-callout-content"><p>&nbsp;</p> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/asmagazine/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/2025-07/John%20Ruffolo.JPG?itok=n3zTTbKf" width="1500" height="1183" alt="Portrait of John Ruffolo"> </div> <span class="media-image-caption"> <p class="small-text">John Ruffolo died from pancreatic cancer in 2021. (Photo: Giovanna Ruffolo)</p> </span> </div></div><p><span lang="EN">鈥淪he just kind of became an ambassador and a face for students who have lost parents,鈥 says Stratford. 鈥淚鈥檝e had a lot of feedback from students about how much they appreciated her bravery and how much they identified with some of the struggles she鈥檇 been through. It鈥檚 a once-in-a-decade or once-in-a-lifetime experience to see a single student have an impact on so many of her classmates.鈥</span></p><p><span lang="EN"><strong>鈥榊our love will be your legacy鈥</strong></span></p><p><span lang="EN">Since high school, Ruffolo estimates she鈥檚 helped raise more than $20,000 for the American Cancer Society. And she鈥檚 not done yet. She hopes the CU 抖阴传媒在线 AMSA chapter will continue organizing the 5K run/walk fundraisers, and that she鈥檒l be able to host similar events during the next phase of her educational journey.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">For now, Ruffolo is focused on finishing up her studies so she can graduate in the spring of 2026. From there, she hopes to continue her education in the medical field, likely as a doctor or physician assistant specializing in pediatric oncology.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">鈥淚 really want to serve that specific community,鈥 she says. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e treating little people who have lots of emotions and a little body. They get very scared easily. You really have to be empathetic and treat them and their families with kindness. I love the idea of sitting down with people, holding their hands, talking to them鈥攏ot just giving them a death sentence, walking out the door and saying, 鈥楤est of luck.鈥欌</span></p><p><span lang="EN">That approach stems directly from her father鈥檚 experiences. As he neared the end of his life, Ruffolo remembers him breaking down and talking about how scared he was. She hopes to be the kind of practitioner who will help people like her dad move forward through their pain and fear, while also treating their underlying illness.</span></p><p><span lang="EN">鈥淵our love will be your legacy,鈥 she says. 鈥淚n a world where there鈥檚 no cure for cancer, investing your time in others is the only way you can live forever.
